It’s always a close call when I’m asked to pick my favourite inversion. I love to handstand so so much but ultimately, hollowback pincha wins simply because it’s the one I’m best at 😂 Handstands have a tendency to frustrate me a little as my progress is slow and often it’s backward progress but hollowback pincha is always there for me to give my ego a little boost 😏 So here’s mine for #FiveYogaFaves. ⠀ It’s been ages since I tried this stag leg shape - and I couldn’t BELIEVE how close I got my toes to my hands!! Breakthroughs are few and far between the longer you’ve been practicing but I feel like a foot grab is right on the horizon! Happy Saturday friends! The thing about Instagram is that often the ‘best’ poses get neglected as they are either too hard to get a photo of or deemed not aesthetically pleasing enough. Twists are SO NEGLECTED! For #FiveYogaFaves, a supine twist is probably my favourite one but it was too damn hard to get a photo of without looking like I was just napping on the floor 😂😴 ⠀ So this kneeling twist it is - which again is perhaps not the most aesthetically pleasing shape - but its one of the deepest twists in my practice and I love it. Favourite backbend?! How could I ever chose just ONE for tomorrow’s #FiveYogaFaves?! I can’t believe how far I’ve come with my backbends, not just in the physical shape I can make but the way I feel about them. ⠀ I used to ~really~ hate them. They made me feel panicked, stressed and just damn uncomfortable. A little bubble of dread would surface whenever I saw them coming in a class or a yoga challenge. But now I can’t get enough of them. In fact I’m guilty of practicing them too much and neglecting other things for them 😂 (*cough cough* hamstrings). So if you’re currently hating the idea of a backbend - stick with it! - they’re growers for sure 👌🏼 ⠀ In the end I went with this flipped grip low lunge. Low lunges are simply my favourite, but I love the added stretch from a flipped grip. It’s the final day of #PeakPosePreparation 🥳 and we are going out on a strong note with #Vasisthasana 💪🏼 ⠀ Not an easy pose at. all. 😳 This is a huge hybrid of strength, balance and flexibility so I’ve chosen two prep poses that help you work on all 3! If you break down what this pose is, it’s essentially a middle/straddle split whilst in side plank - so if you struggle with much depth in your middle split, it will limit how high up you can get that top leg. And the more your limbs stick out in odd directions, the harder you’ll find the balance as well! ⠀ So shorten the limb and try the side plank variation on the second slide. I LOVE this variation as it feels amazing and makes such a pretty shape. Taking the shape to standing on one leg (slide 3) is a great way to work on the movement of the flying leg into position - work on moving it back in line with your body where it will make your life easier in the side plank. Flying grasshopper is one of those poses that looks pretty damn badass, but for me, when I’m in it, it feels super pathetic 😂 Only because that back flying legs feels about an inch off the ground! Anyone get what I mean?! ⠀ So here is the penultimate pose for #PeakPosePreparation 🦗 And really all you need for this one is a little bit of strength and a LOT of hip opening. So I’ve focussed on the hips as they will always be my sticky point. You’ll notice that my foot is *just* on the back of my elbow - holding on for dear life - You really need to press the foot down into the arm if your hips are tight to keep that foot still. And I mean REALLY press! ⠀ Keeping the flying leg resting on the arms like slide 2 is obviously an amazing prep pose. Splat 🤦🏼‍♀️ ⠀ Also known as tortoise pose! 🐢 Day 8 for #PeakPosePreparation and another pose which isn’t particularly my forté (as with anything else hamstring-y) but I somehow manage to wiggle my way into this. ⠀ This one feels a pretty straight forward one to prepare for, work that wide leg fold paying attention to keeping your spine as straight as you can. ⠀ Remember that tortoise pose doesn’t require straight legs, they just straighten out eventually as your flexibility improves. So bend the knees as much as you need to thread the arms underneath and then let the heels slide away from you to deepen your splat! Anyone need a video entry for this one? So when we were thinking of a list of advanced poses for this #PeakPosePreparation challenge, Standing Compass definitely entered my head and I was SO TEMPTED to leave it out cos I’ve only ever tried it once whilst holding on to a wall for balance and basically it’s not my forté.... I just lack the flexibility, balance and focus required 😂 ⠀ But then I thought how selfish of me to exclude something simply because it’s hard for ME. What about everyone else?! So I put my big girl pants on and gave it a go. I’m actually very very pleased with what I managed! It’s not very ‘instagram pretty’ - I struggled to be able to stand up straight but I feel I got close enough to it that you can at least tell what pose I’m trying to do 😂😂 ⠀ So I’m not really your host for tips here, I’m sure my cohosts will have something valuable to share, but obviously I’m aaaaall about the prep poses for this one. Seated compass is a nice obvious choice and flying warrior is essentially the same pose but balancing in a side plank. Blast from the past 😂😂 Today’s #PeakPosePreparation pose is Scorpion Pincha 🦂 ⠀ For me this was the easiest shape to learn to find balance on my forearms but I know there are many others with the opposite experience. Just thought I’d show you guys where mine started - and I promise I was bending to the best of my ability here! ⠀ A really good prep pose for this is Forearm wheel as you are pressing down through the elbows just like you do for pincha and working on that strength in a backbend. This is obviously a super tricky pose too and therefore any version of wheel is a great place to start 👌🏼 I remember trying that one leg forearm wheel - lifting a leg felt like trying to move a mountain 😂 Looking back at where you’ve come from is the best motivation to keep moving forward ✌🏼 ⠀ If you’d like a short 15 minute flow to work on building the strength for poses like this, my newest YouTube video has just gone live!
