So I have this little dream, this little idea, that I’d love to have this comprehensive YouTube channel where people can come and find a variety of yoga flows - whatever speaks to them in that moment - and practice along with me wherever and whenever. And I’m not the biggest self-believer but I believe in myself in that I’m capable of this and I can do it! But man is it scary. ⠀ Will anyone actually watch them? Will people think I’m a poor teacher? Will people criticise my teaching cues? So many doubts in my head but I’m determined to go ahead and do my best with it. I want to be able to make something of myself on here, I’ve spent years posting to this account and am incredibly lucky to have so many of you choosing to follow along and I’m hoping to transition this away from a hobby and more into a part time job. I’ve no idea what potential it has but it’s the start of a New Year and I’m feeling ballsy to try and carve my own path. ⠀ So I would love your help. Do you practice to online yoga? I got inspired by the handstand queen that is @susanbishopyoga to try this little leaning handstand and I was under no illusion that it was gunna be anything but rock solid 😂 ⠀ Truth be told, I really don’t work on handstands these days. I do a few here and there for fun but it’s been a long long time since I’ve tried something new, or worked on something particular or really tried to improve any part of my handstands. ⠀ I dunno why, cos I really do bloody love a handstand, but maybe I just lack ambition with them? I’ve still not got round to trying to learn to press, I just don’t have the determination for it! ⠀ But what I did want to share is that I haven’t always felt this way. When I was first learning I was literally obsessed. I would try them for hours and hours and every practice I would be working on something way outside my current level of experience. And that’s where the progress was made. I threw away the rule book about what you should be able to do before progressing to the next thing. I was trying an eagle leg handstand when I couldn’t even hold any shape for more than 3 seconds 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ But practicing this little leaning handstand reminded me of that time, cos I just had to try ‘one more time’ - which is never, NEVER, just one more time 😂 Learning to handstand is directly correlated to how much time you spend on your hands TRYING to handstand. So if that’s you, keep putting those hands down and be patient. Whenever I post a photo of me in pincha, I pretty much always have someone asking me about my grip 😂 and as much as I’d love to say that using Kali Mudra in my pincha is to practice fearlessness, inner strength and empowerment, realistically it’s because it’s easier for me 😂 ⠀ So #KaliMudra is interlaced hands with the index finger released as a little pointy stick. I actually tend to stick my little finger out in pincha as well to prevent it getting squished but I tucked it under for today 🤙🏼 ⠀ But I actually love that this mudra represents fearlessness, because it’s such a huge part of inverting. I can’t tell you the amount of time I looked at this pose and attempted it only to end up in regular mermaid arms and totally confused 😂 ⠀ So tomorrow is day 6 of #ExploreYourMudras and we have #GaneshaMudra which is the fingers hooked together. Probably most commonly know for being used in Cow Face pose so I took the cow face arms and jazzed it all up a bit with a low lunge. This was actually reeeeeeally tough on my left shoulder so only give it a go if you have a good range of internal rotation. ⠀ Ganesha Mudra is meant to give power to overcome obstacles, to have self confidence and courage to overcome anything that’s holding you back. Very scary (for me) but very exciting Announcement! 😳🙈🥳 I’ve always shied away from sharing my teaching through this platform in any other form than posts with tips and tricks - maybe due to self doubt or fear of failure but you know what, sometimes you just have to put your big girl pants on and be brave. SO! As of February 2019, I will be offering online private yoga teaching. I am also launching a YouTube channel which I will share more about soon ☺️☺️ That means it doesn’t matter where in the world you are, we can practice together and I’m so excited to share my teaching with you. I’ve known since day 1 that I am a very descriptive teacher, my strengths lie in explaining what to do with your body in a clear but concise way so that you can learn how to put your own body into the correct alignment. I think this stems from my background in biology and having a really good understanding of the human body. I’m gunna make a wild assumption that no one has ever taken this mudra in this pose before 😂😂 but I don’t see no mudra rule book so I’m rolling with it! ⠀ Day 4 for #ExploreYourMudras in #DhyanaMudra which is one hand cradling the other with the thumbs lifted and connected. It is said to represent balance and allow you a deeper level of concentration. Probably why it’s more commonly seen in seated meditation and a huge number of Buddha ornaments not a wide leg forward fold. Decided to turn today’s post into a dose of ‘keeping it real’ with a little before and after that’s not quite the usual. ⠀ I was taking the bottom picture for today’s #ExploreYourMudras and when I looked back at what I’d taken I can’t say I was happy with what I saw. You always see flaws in yourself that others don’t but all I saw in that pic was belly! I think there’s a fine line between loving your body no matter what and simply recognising an unflattering angle and I feel I’m in a pretty good headspace at the moment to easily recognise that this was just a case of poor posture and poor lighting. I’m not so ‘sorted’ as to have been happy to post it as it was though am I?! ⠀ I was already showered and changed by the this time, hence the outfit change (I never wear anything other than yoga outfits, whose with me?) but I went to the effort of getting everything back out to redo it and also set up my daylight lamp. The top picture is the result and suddenly I have abs. ⠀ I was just editing the better picture when I sort of caught myself and thought ‘what the hell am I doing here?’ and ultimately, decided I wanted to share both. Remember that so much of what you see online is orchestrated to look the best way it can. It may not be the focus of this post but this pose is one of my favourite to photograph. I’m a sucker for symmetry and the quirky way the arms look like they’re on the wrong side of the body just has me all 😍 ⠀ So day 2 of #ExploreYourMudras is Anjali Mudra 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 It has its own emoji! Probably the best known mudra and more commonly called prayer hands, joining the palms in this way is a gesture of respect but is also used to create calm and focus within the body which is why it is often taken at the beginning of a yoga class 🙏🏼 ⠀ Probably the only mudra that I consistently use within my practice and without even realising it! But in answer to my own question from yesterday, I totally feel on board with this one in feeling calm when I use it. Tomorrow starts off our new challenge #ExploreYourMudras and coming from someone who knows very little/zero about mudras, I assure you that you are very welcome to join us no matter your knowledge on the topic! ⠀ So tomorrow is #Vajrapradama mudra and if nothing else, it just looks super pretty 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ The connecting of the hands in this way is meant to cultivate self-confidence and inner strength and if there’s one thing we could all do with at this time of year, it’s a belief in ourselves. ⠀ I’m trying to decide how much I believe in the ‘power’ of these mudras, I’ve always been skeptical about most spiritual/internal energy ideas but I’m keeping an open mind as I work my way through these. I can certainly vouch for the sense of strength and empowerment you can feel when you take a pose such as Warrior II so why not also when you make a certain shape with your hands? I’m still on the fence, I’ll let you know. ⠀ What do you think? I don’t have the time like I used to to be able to join in with #AYearOfYoga2019 but I saw this low lunge variation pop up and as one of my favourite poses, I thought I’d share my two cents about it. ⠀ The biggest thing I hear people struggling with here is balance. It’s so hard 😂 But here’s what helps me: ⠀ ◾️ Keep your gaze forward or slightly upward for the duration of you entering the pose. The minute my head drops back, my balance is on the edge. Notice I stare towards the ceiling as I get the grip sorted. ⠀ ◾️ Hold your front knee as you flip the first hand. You can slightly pull/brace against it as you flip the grip and keeps you from sending too much weight backwards. Which brings me on to... ⠀ ◾️ The imbalance is usually backwards. Your chest leans back, you reach back, and you usually lose balance by tipping slightly backwards. So counteract this by reeeeally pushing your hips forwards. This doubley helps open up the hip flexors to make you a little more bendy. ⠀ ◾️ The side to side balance becomes easier the lower your lunge. Simply put, your centre of gravity is lower. But obviously you can’t change that over night so not only should your core be braced right, image your legs like the arms of a pair of scissors trying to close. Squeeze them inward to stabilise your base. ⠀ I hope these help you next time you try it out. And of course use a strap if flipping the grip isn’t happening for you just yet. It’s the second of Jan which means I am on my second day of #Veganuary and if I’m totally honest with you, I never set out doing this with the intention of only doing it for a month. More that I wanted to be able to turn vegan but I didn’t have the motivation or ‘bravery’ to start before now. This is my gentle way of giving it a go with a bit of a break out clause 😂 but one I sincerely hope I won’t be using. ⠀ I knew before I started that my weakness would be chocolate 🍫 (and cheese), so in an effort to ensure I don’t cave for a quick dairy filled sugar fix, I’ve been testing out some vegan baking! I’m never gunna make it as a good blogger as I simply never remember to photo anything before I eat it 🤣 but yesterday I baked a Banana Bread and due to popular demand on my stories, here’s the SUPER SIMPLE recipe! ⠀ 🍞2 tablespoons ground flaxseed 🍞5 tablespoons water ⠀ Combine these to make an ‘egg’ ⠀ 🍞2 large ripe bananas - mashed 🍞1/3 cup applesauce 🍞2/3 cup brown sugar 🍞1/4 cup almond milk 🍞2 cups whole wheat flour 🍞1 teaspoon baking soda 🍞1/2 teaspoon salt 🍞3/4 cup chopped non-dairy chocolate chips ⠀ Vigorously stir together the bananas and apple sauce first, then add the sugar, almond milk and flax-eggs. Gently stir in the flour, baking soda and salt, finally add the choccie chips. ⠀ 50 mins in the oven at 180C/350F. Sometimes I’m just not in the mood for sun salutations. Too jumpy and forward foldy for first thing in the morning when my spine hasn’t woken up yet. ⠀ This is one of my favourite ways to warm up when I’m in that kinda mood. ⠀ - From downdog, roll forwards towards plank. - Lower to the floor through chaturanga - Lift the chest into baby cobra (really focus on squeezing the lower back muscles rather than just using your arms to push you up) - Push back into squatting dog (like child’s pose but the knees are lifted 🔥) before lifting hips back to downdog.
