Protecting your child is an important role for a parent. This mom is probably right to have her kid helmeted and armored! That said, it can be taken too far. This last week, a neighbor called the police in a Chicago North Shore suburb because an 8-year-old girl was walking her dog around the block without adult supervision. Time to let kids explore, learn, try and fail,and sometimes even face hurt and disappointment. Resilience and determination can only come from trials and testing. Better for that to happen in a relatively protected environment growing up than to put it off and face the full force of life's trials later on.
