Tomorrow is Day 3 for #YogaBasics101 and quite appropriately for a beginners challenge, we are giving you what in my opinion, is the hardest yoga pose of them all - Chaturanga Dandasana. ⠀ If I thought downdog needed a thesis of explanation, chaturanga needs a freakin’ encyclopaedia. Maybe two. ⠀ So once again, I’ve chosen what I feel are the most important points for this pose/movement and the 3 things I want you to focus on in the video are: 1️⃣ My core 2️⃣ My shoulders 3️⃣ My elbows ⠀ Then play a fun game of spot the difference between the two and hopefully you’ll notice the following points for the improved version: ⠀ 1️⃣ I tucked my tailbone!!! Pull the tailbone under and solidify your core. Imagine your torso - from your shoulders down to below your bum - is one solid plank of wood. Nothing within that space will bend or move without everything else going with it. 2️⃣ My shoulders shift out BEYOND my wrists before I start the decent. This is HARD. There’s more weight in the hands and you use muscles that probably aren’t used to being used. Keep your shoulder blades broadening across your upper back to find strength and stability here. Just this shifting forward and then returning back is a great strength building drill 💪🏼 3️⃣ Because my shoulders have gone forwards, my elbows are able to stay tracked above my wrists 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 This is a key alignment point of this pose. To help give me strength here, I imagine my hands dragging back along the mat towards my knees. It’s just an ‘energetic movement’ - the hands don’t actually move - but the sensation of pulling back in that direction keeps the back strong. ⠀ This is one of MANY MANY ways you can learn this pose, I hope these few tips help you understand the pose and the movement a little better. Tomorrow is day 4of 🧘🏼‍♀️ #YogaBasics101 🧘🏼‍♀️ Day 4 we will be opening our hips with #Garlandpose or Sanskrit name #malasana Our hips are one of the largest joints in our bodies, an energetic juncture point where it’s easy to store anger, tension and rigidity. Our hips allow us to move forward in life with grace and ease, so it’s important to keep this part of our bodies limber, open and lubricated. When aligned properly, practicing this pose can feel so good, opening up the hip flexors and offering a deep stretch to the groin muscles. This is the most challenging day of

#YogaBasics101 Day 3 #Chaturanga . This is the most challenging day of the whole 12 days, so let’s get it over with, ok!?😅 . Check out the tag #leighswristwarmup and scroll to the beginning for a few really great ways to warm up your wrists...it’s really important before pouring all your weight into your wrists. And if your wrists are sensitive like mine, you can do this whole thing on fists rather than flat palms. I practiced the Ashtanga primary series for the last two years on my fists, and it has a gazillion chaturangas. . Chaturanga is a transition pose and the slower you do it, the stronger you will become. But until you practice this enough times to build up your strength, it may feel very challenging, so lower yourself only as slowly as is comfortable for you. . We had to sneak the hard one in early when you least expected it...🤣 Don’t curse is too hard, just make sure you come back tomorrow! We will be nicer, ok?! . Really loving your posts so far! Tomorrow is day 7 of 🧘🏼‍♀️ #YogaBasics101 🧘🏼‍♀️ So I have to mention Malasana day... I had one girl refer to the pose as if she looked like a troll and another one where the pose reminded her of sitting on a toilet 🤣 great job! Seriously that made my Malasana day 💃💃 🧘🏼‍♀️ Day 7 we will be working on our #LowLunge or Sanskrit name #Anjaneyasana 🧘🏼‍♀️ IMPORTANT!!! This is the most important thing for low lunge in my opinion... TILT PELVIS FORWARD... this allows you to feel a deeper stretch in you psoas and hip flexors and doesn’t let you just dunk into your lower back. Swipe for modifications👈🏻 🧘🏼‍♀️ Low Lunge stretches the legs, groin, and hip flexors, while also opening the front torso, chest, and shoulders. It strengthens and tones the thighs, hips, and butt, while the balancing aspect helps to develop flexible stability. Think lift lift lift! Tuck the tailbone with all your might and think of knitting the lower ribs in towards your hip bones. ⠀ 2️⃣ Broaden the space between your shoulder blades as wiiiiiide as you can. Press the spine up to the sky almost like you are trying to concave out your chest. ⠀ 3️⃣ So easily neglected but your legs work SO hard in a plank. If your quads aren’t aching, you can squeeze tighter or hold longer 💪🏼 This is the same engagement you will find from tucking the tailbone so as you do that with the pelvis, see if you can ‘find’ your kneecaps and squeeze them upward. ⠀ 4️⃣ Heels press out behind you as though you’re trying to make yourself as tall as possible. ⠀ 5️⃣ Press down into the mat through the elbows to help find that spread of the shoulder blades but also think of pushing the elbows forwards/away from you. This will allow you to find more strength and stability in the upper body and make you feel solid as a rock! ⠀ As an extra little challenge for myself I’m going to hold a plank for time and see how long I can last 💪🏼💪🏼 Next Sunday I’ll do the same and see if I can better myself. #YogaBasics101 Day 6 #HalfMoonPose . Twinning with myself today! Can you spot the difference? . Depending on your flexibility, a block can be super useful in this pose, or a stool, or a book, or...? (Let’s see what you can come up with...?) . Think about opening the hips, one stacked on top of the other, and really engaging the back leg. Pointing, flexing or flointing your foot can help to remind you to stay engaged. Floint is just a silly made up word for pointing your foot, but flexing the toes back...full on yoga toes style. I didn’t do it here, but hopefully you get the idea! . It’s typically easier to balance when looking down. Find a dristi, a gazing point, while you hold for 5 breaths. If that’s not enough of a challenge, try looking up and find yourself a dristi there. This is especially difficult outside...especially blue skies.☺️ . And then of course, if you’re ready for more, I shared the entrance into #SugarCanePose here in the top video. If you can’t reach your foot with your hand, you can try closing your hips like I demo in the bottom video, and then once you have the hand to foot connection you can work towards the open hips of the top video. If you follow my yoga journey, then you’ve probably noticed that I love inversions and arm balances and really dislike backbending. It’s just the way my body is built, my shoulders are naturally really tight and my back does not bend that easily, so in turn I tend to avoid poses that require open shoulders and a strong, flexible back, with the exception of Upward facing dog. 🐶 Upward facing dog is not one of those flashy and intricate poses you usually see here on Instagram. It’s a basic (a beginner’s) pose and as such a part of every single one of my yoga practices. It offers a really good and wholesome stretch, from your arms, to your back, core, legs, etc. This pose is also not that hard to do unlike some of the more demanding yoga poses. Just lift your hips, thighs and knees off the mat, keep your arms straight (by pushing up from the mat with your palms) and lift your chest (so you’re not slouching). If your hips, thighs and knees stay on the mat and your arms are slightly bent, congrats! It will give you everything you need to start your yoga practice with confidence and safety. Another practice session with my boy. I fell like he is more focused than before. Kids are naturally good at flexibility and jumping. However their balance and concentration needs more improvement. Most psychology professionals say self-control is natural born. Experiments of ‘delayed gratification’ indicates some kid born with more self-controlling ability than others. On the other hand, I believe it can be train and guided as well.
