Let me set the scene for you...⁣ ⁣ You FINALLY get a date night out with your husband. You’ve been looking forward to eating a hot meal without someone needing something from you. Having a conversation without getting Interrupted. ⁣ ⁣ You go to your closet, get your favorite dress, put it on it doesn’t freaking fit. You look and feel like a busted can of biscuits. ⁣ ⁣ You then proceed to rip your closet apart, try on outfit after outfit. Nothing looks good. You get pissed at yourself for letting yourself go. You then have yourself a pity party crying on the floor surround by all the clothes that don’t fit. You snap your husband when he is trying to be helpful and then say forget it we aren’t going. You then proceed to put on your PJs and lay in bed alone and cry because you ruined the night while eating a pint of Ben and Jerry’s to help you feel better. ⁣ ⁣ Does this sound familiar? We might think to ourselves “I have anxiety so I can’t do this” or “This makes me feel anxious, so I can’t do it” or “I guess I’m just not the type of person who can ever _____”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These limiting beliefs about ourselves can feel like truth but they’re just excuses for us to stay safe from uncertainty and discomfort. If you tell yourself that you can't do things because of your anxiety, you're creating limits in your life. 🍍Why are you only listening to the one negative, anxious voice in your head? What about the others? 💀 This thought was like a lightbulb moment in my own battle to overcome Anxiety. It’s hard to put into a simple theory but here it is - How long have you only been listening to one negative voice in your head? ‘Pretty often, if not almost always....’ Are you happy with that? ‘No....’ Then why still do it? ‘Because that voice shouts the loudest and speaks before any of the others have a chance’ Ok, well how often is the negative Anxious voice right or helpful? ’I’ll have to think about that....’ 🤪 The point here is to show you that when you really think about it, when was the last time the Anxious voice was right about anything, helpful to you in any way or saved you from a situation. Rack your brains and think. When I did this, I realised that not only was my Anxiety the only voice I ever listened to, but actually it was so often wrong and inconsistent that I realised maybe it’s time to listen to the positive voices also. Even if the negative anxious voices are much louder and more real, this is all smoke and mirrors and when you examine it, your Anxiety cannot predict the future or remember the past any better more accurately than your positive, happy emotional voices.

EMOTIONS IN SOBRIETY⁣ ⁣ In sobriety we need to get really good at feeling all of the emotions. Not drinking alcohol means losing the ability to quickly anesthetise painful emotions. But with that, we are also not suppressing the positive emotions or gaining the anxiety fuelled withdrawal on the morning afters. ⁣ ⁣ When starting to moderate emotions without alcohol, it can be easy to engage in self destructive dopamine releasing behaviours; sugar, sex, social media, shopping (all the S's!) ⁣ ⁣ But ultimately and eventually, we can start to find our own coping strategies within, without the need for external gratification.⁣ ⁣ I'm interested to hear from those who don't drink...
