Thoracic extension - stretching the “six pack” muscles, improving your posture. In our thoracic extension stretch, clients extend their spine over the palm of our therapist. This creates a stretch in upper rectus abdominal muscles. Rectus abdominis or, the “six pack” muscles, are extremely pivotal for postural correctness as it is the prime mover in spinal flexion and is a main contributor to spinal stability. It is also assists with trunk stabilization during movements involving the head and neck. Spinal flexion stability comes into play with exercises like a crunch, an ab rollout, and allows for a stable spine during more difficult exercises like a deadlift or a snatch. It also comes into play with day to day activities like bending over to tie your shoe or sitting up in bed after a long night's sleep. Rectus abdominis tightness is one of the most common physiological adaptations we see, as forward rounding continues to plague our posture. As we round forward, the abdominal muscles tighten as if we’re perpetually holding a crunch. This creates unnecessary length in the back and compromises the stability of the spine. By stretching the upper rectus abdominis we restore length in the shortened abdominal muscles, allowing for proper function of the core and spine, while at the same time alleviating unnecessary tension on the lats, QL’s, along with proximal and distal lumbar fascia.
