It's not always an easy gig being human. There are many not so fun things we go through and experience during our time here. But one thing for sure is if we work at looking on the bright side, and keep a positive attitude, things will always be much easier. If you're looking for a competitive advantage you can take to the arena and use today, take this tip. If you can keep a positive attitude throughout the not so fun stuff, you've already beat more than half your competition (who just finished throwing their sucker in the dirt). #mentaltoughness #mentaltoughnessbootcamp #barrelracingtips #horsetips #horsepeople #equestrian #barrelracing #protip #winning #iamawinner #minset #brainset

When a horse develops mental tension and anxiety (worried, trouble focusing, unresponsive), they also develop physical tension in their body. This translates into stiffness that is usually vertical in nature (head up, tight muscles, short, choppy stride, etc).⠀ ⠀ Because it's hard for a horse to be vertically stiff and tense if they are moving on an arc with lateral flexion, doing so is very effective for dissolving tension and encouraging relaxation.⠀ ⠀ The second you feel a horse get mentally/physically braced and tense, try flexing the neck from side to side, or asking for full body bend on a circle or a dynamic, fluid figure eight.⠀ ⠀ Really relax in your own body and look forward with soft eyes while encouraging smooth, but forward, reaching movement. Use your energy, voice, a touch or some rest to reward the smallest positive shift in your horse's mental state.⠀ ⠀ Over time, anxiety and tension can be replaced with habits of moving with softness and relaxation.👌🏼⠀ .⠀ At @barrelracertips, I offer resources for developing educated, confident, high-achieving equine athletes. Feature Friday: Meet Amber L Case 🦄 Hometown? Tickfaw, LA until 7 years ago. Currently Elkton, TN 🦄 Age 39 🦄 Occupation: teacher 🦄 Horse(s) Names: MRF Game On aka Hotrod (10) FifteenSecondsTaFame aka Whiskey (9) Lena Lectric Playboy aka Lena (14) This Guys Got Money aka Franc (4) Smashed French Pie aka Soleil (3) Glowing Streak Of Fling aka Honey Badger (7) Takin On Lectricity aka Sherman (2) 🦄 How long have you been competing? 36 years 🦄 Barrel Racer you most admire? Ed & Martha Wright 🦄 Favorite quote? I don’t have a particular favorite, but this verse is one I keep in mind: Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” 🦄 If you could ride any horse to compete on, who would it be? My mare, Glowing Streak of Fling. She’s been injured since July 2018. 😢💔 🦄 Tip for someone wanting to start barrel racing? Ride with an experienced person for a while. So many people would gladly help. Don’t tackle it alone. 🦄 Favorite barrel racing advice you’ve been given? Slow work. If you don’t, you’ll run all of the training out of one. 🦄 What other activities do you do on a regular basis, outside of horses, that you consider make you who you are? I love to dance almost as much as I love training horses. Also, the rodeo queen in me refuses to leave. Lol 😂 I love fashion & putting outfits together. I am actively involved in our church & work daily on my Christian walk. I’m still just a sinner, though, so I thank God for saving me! ✝️💟 🦄 When you face adversity what is your go to? What gives you drive to keep going? In general, prayer gets me through adversity. In regards to horses, the practice pen gets me through. 🏇🏼😉 I’m driven by the need to see my horses develop & get better with each run. Also, I’ve done this all my life & don’t know what else to do with myself. 😆🤷🏼‍♀️ 🦄 You get a week to spend it with a mentor, who would it be and why? Since Ed has passed, I’d have to say Martha Wright. Assessing all the ways you're not where you want to be will not get you closer to where you want to go. Celebrating where you are right now and expressing gratitude for all the goodness of the present moment, is the first step to getting where you want to go. So often we think if we could just have this or just win that, then we would be happy. No, "there" is not a better place to be happy. Be happy and content right now, so you'll be happy when you get "there". Have you ever noticed how two people could be living very similar lives and situations but one is happy with where they are at (whether they are working for more or not) and one is miserable? The only thing different is the way they think about where they are at. Mindset.

This concept applies whenever we want a snappier, lighter response from a lesser degree of pressure. Whether it’s lightness in the face, or responsiveness to our seat, leg or energy… We want to “set it up and wait” (make it easy, and give the horse a chance to process and figure it out) then release instantly to teach a NEW concept in the BEGINNING stages, but beyond that if we don’t refine - we’ll never reach that amazing place of “less is more!” And let me tell ya, it’s so, SO much more - on the barrel pattern and beyond! They say you either perform 10% better or worse under pressure. Which one are you? I perform better under pressure and I think I mastered that skill pulling off last minute assignments and studying at University.😂 It doesn't necessarily feel good, however, and it's a similar feeling when I'm up against pressure in barrel racing. In Mental Toughness Boot Camp, we talk about how to deal with this pressure. I give tips on how to not succumb to that feeling so that you can come out looking like a diamond 😉 Keep an eye out for an announcement of when Boot Camp opens again in June (sooner than I had originally planned) or sign up at my website for my newsletter and stay in the know. #horses #horsepeople #barrelracer #barreracing #mentaltoughnessbootcamp #equestrian #mindsetcoach #barrelracingtips #ridethestride

Most high level barrel horses are high spirited individuals. However, when developing a barrel horse, if we allow them to express their exuberance without first having obedience and a well-established education, our success in likely to be inconsistent at best. Exuberance without obedience can even be dangerous. In the initial training stages, some horses may get a little “flat,” but their energy can always be built back up and encouraged once the foundational elements are in place. Excess energy can be a huge asset when it’s channeled in the right direction and expressed in the moments when it’s best utilized and needed most – which is in a run and not in the warm up pen or tied to the trailer, etc. With connection and communication we can direct our horse’s energy and help them confidently understand when and how it’s appropriate to ‘express themselves!’ ✨💗🐴 . This isn't particularly easy for me. I like to be awesome the very first time. Well, ego does anyway! We really need to give ourselves some grace, ask the perfectionist to step aside and enjoy the process of learning a new skill. We can look at it from a different perspective and get along better. Instead of "oh man, I suck at this" it could be: "wow, there is a lot that goes into this, I really appreciate those that have it mastered". I'm not sure anyone likes to be "colty" but we all have to start somewhere. It's those that push through the colty stage that ends up being the master through their perseverance. How about you? Do you get frustrated when you're not a pro right away? What do you tell yourself so you don't get frustrated?

Feature Friday: Meet Savannah Shumpert 🦄 Hometown? Mooreville, MS 🦄 Age? 12 years old 🦄 Occupation? 7th grade student 🦄 Horse's name? Broadway Laney 🦄 Horse's age? 14 years old 🦄 How long have you been competing? I have been running barrels for 7 years. 🦄 Barrel racer you most admire? The barrel racer I most admire is Myle Meyers. She has a wonderful sense of humor. She is kind and very encouraging after both a good run and a bad one! 🦄 Favorite quote? Mr. Chad Crider told me to find at least one good thing about every run. Then he said, "Sometimes all you can find to say is: Man, I made that shirt look good!" 😆 🦄 If you could ride any horse to compete on, who would it be? I really, really love to run my horse! But if I could choose another one, I think I'd like to ride HF Bully the Kid, owned by Mrs. Shelby Stewart. He's so nice! 🦄 Tip for someone wanting to start barrel racing? Don't be afraid to ask for advice from other riders you look up to. Most of them are very friendly and willing to help a new rider! Easy access to ultra successful riders is one thing that makes our sport unique. Take advantage of it! 🦄 Favorite barrel racing advice you've been given? My friend Megan Jamerson gave me some great advice when I was a little frustrated with how my horse was clocking. "The margin for error on a 1D horse is miniscule. One tiny mistake and you're in the 2D." It made me appreciate how forgiving my mare is! 🦄 What other activities do you do on a regular basis, outside of horses, that you consider make you are who you are? (What all hats do you wear?) I take art classes, play basketball, love video games, and I definitely enjoy a good book! 🦄 What has been your most memorable run to date? My most memorable run was the one in the BBR Finals "Fast Fifty" at the Jim Norick Arena in Oklahoma City this year. The atmosphere was electric, the crowd was super loud, and my horse made a nice clean 1D run! It was the most fun I've ever had barrel racing!
