Hike #24 (continued) ...I call 911. Anyone who knows me, knows I don’t know when to say when. In literally every aspect of my life, this rule applies. I. Never. Say. When. This was a lesson in knowing when to say when. Honestly, without Knox, I may have kept trying to get up to the ‘trail’. I may have made it, or I may have been at the base of the mountain with broken bones, at worst dead. I’m lucky I called when I did. We had been out there already for 7 hours. Half an hour after I called, the sun went in, and the temperature dropped (the one officer later said, at the trailhead alone it was just below 50 degrees). Knox is shaking, but still. He’s alert. And he’s resting his head on my left shoulder. Knox knows. The 911 operator, Amy, is being the go-between for me and the pilots/officers. At first they were asking me to get in a clearing so they could get a visual. Mustering what was left of my mental strength, I make my way to clearing. I slide 20 feet down the cliff just barely catching a tree. They are trying to come get me on foot. It’s too steep and they can’t. They then tell me there is a chute I can slide down on my butt with Knox in my lap 20 feet to my right. I see no chute. Again. I say ‘when’. Or more like, ‘fuck no. I am not moving anymore.’ (They later tell me, after looking at the topography map and better assessing the conditions, they are glad I didn’t because it could have created a wet slide avalanche. They also say, yes, there was no way I could have seen the chute.) At this point, I’m completely soaked, sitting in snow, Knox on my lap, shivering uncontrollably, and the only thing keeping me from sliding down off the cliff is ‘standing’ on a sapling. They can’t get me with the helicopter they have. Not all helicopters can do drop down rescues. So we wait for another one. Finally they get to me. I’ve never been below a helicopter. Neither has Knox. I thought we were going to blow off the mountain. Both scared shitless, they hammock us together. We’re dangling 13,000ft in the air. I’m glad I can’t see. Knox can though. They take us to the base of the mountain and get us inside the helicopter. They then take us to the sheriff...
