Chinese researchers have created a safe and efficient technology to edit RNA, which could largely avoid side effects and ethical concerns from previous gene-editing technologies. • CRISPR relies on the delivery chemically modified guide RNAs, which may lead to aberrant effector activity, delivery barrier or immunogenicity, Wei Wensheng, a Peking University biologist and leading researcher of the latest technology, told the Global Times on Wednesday. • On the contrary, the latest technology, called leveraging endogenous ADAR for programmable editing of RNA (LEAPER), makes uses of native proteins and does not change DNA directly, thus would not bring about heritable changes and is precise and safe, Zhou Zhuo, another member of the research team, told the Global Times. • Cellular-level experiments over the past two years have shown that LEAPER achieved editing efficiencies of up to 80 percent, according to Zhou. He said that the team is now testing LEAPER in rats. • LEAPER is active in a broad spectrum of cell types, including multiple human primary cell types, and can restore the deficient cells of patients with Hurler syndrome without evoking innate immune responses. crispr.daily. Casebia’s two-stage gene therapy approach was successful in delivering

Casebia’s two-stage gene therapy approach was successful in delivering the human gene coding for clotting factor VIII (FVIII) in a mouse model of hemophilia A, leading to stable and increasing levels of the factor. • “Our scientific team, led by Alan Brooks, Ph.D., have achieved a notable and potentially impactful advance towards a curative treatment for patients with hemophilia A,” Jim Burns, PhD, president and CEO of Casebia, said in a press release. • Current AAV-based gene therapy approaches face some challenges. Among them are variability in the production of FVIII, the development of neutralizing antibodies against AAV, and the limited ability to integrate the gene of interest into the genome. • Mice treated with the two-stage approach had up to “70% of normal human FVIII levels that were stable through the longest time point measured at 4 months,” the researchers said. This production increased with repeated injection of the vesicles. • “Our experimental therapy has several advantages over existing approaches,” Brooks said. “The first is that it is theoretically stable for a lifetime because it is integrated into the host’s genome. The second advantage is that you can repeat-dose the LNP component to achieve the desired level of FVIII expression.” • “While gene therapy approaches currently in clinical development that use only the AAV component have resulted in FVIII expression in patients, the level of FVIII is unpredictable in individuals and cannot be changed once it is established,” he added. • “While acknowledging that early-stage results in animal models do not always translate into successful human treatments, we are extremely encouraged by the results,” said Burns. So I decided to get my blood pressure checked and wow fasting works! It was higher prior before the fast. I also noticed my energy levels today were great! Just shows our bodies are more resilient than we give it credit for. Also want to mention that this whole 2k calorie structure the food administration has set around us is useless. You don't need that many calories to function during the day unless you are training hardcore burning more energy up than storing. Most people are probably storing more than burning. Don't overthink dieting or counting calories. Don't allow food to control you, but enjoy the times when you do eat and it better be something worth enjoying for. And you can scroll through my pictures and see what I've been eating. It's not just chicken and broccoli ... Gross! We should treat each day like it's our last day on Earth, give thanks and respect to one another and enjoy good food!

“Chlorophyll? More like Borophyll!” Actually, not so boring. Declining chlorophyll levels in the #oceans may mean our ecosystems have a lower production potential. This then affects #jobs and #money coming into our provinces. http://bit.ly/2XpHCY5

crispr.daily. A special Eurobarometer survey report on food safety was published in

A special Eurobarometer survey report on food safety was published in June. It shows that the regularly promoted narrative that “90% of Europeans are against GMOs” is false. ‘Genetically modified ingredients in food and drink’ are reported as having a comparatively low level of concern associated with them (27%). • Concern has more than halved compared to the last similar survey, published in 2010, when GMOs where reported as the 4th highest ranking concern (66%). Of all the issues of concern in the survey, genome editing is the one with the lowest concern (4%) and awareness (22%). • Three issues surface most frequently in most Member States: antibiotics, hormones and steroids (44%), pesticide residues in food (39%) and food additives (36%).
