Calories or kilocalories (kcals) are the amount of energy in foods or drinks we ingest. Once we digest this it provides the energy we need for fuel to allow our body to function like breathing and digesting food - these are our basal requirements. It also fuels our activities over the course of the day from our exercise to our NEAT. There are some primary sources of calories in the form of macronutrients that can also provide certain nutrients, fibre, vitamins, minerals and amino acids depending on the type we ingest. The more commonly referred to macronutrients are, proteins, fats and carbohydrates and each of these have a certain amount of energy (kcal) per 1 gram. Protein contains 4 kcal/g Carbohydrates also contain 4 kcal/g Fats contain 9kcals/g But did you know that alcohol is also a macronutrient? 7kcals/g. Alcohol calories are often deemed 'empty calories', ie they have no nutritional value. Most alcoholic drinks contain trace amounts of vitamins and minerals, but not usually in amounts that make any significant contribution to a balanced diet So are all calories equal? From the perspective of thermodynamics - yes! A calorie is a calorie in every shape and form from an energy balance perspective, so if fat loss is your goal, understanding calories and energy intake are important. So the good news is body recomposition can be as easy as a numbers game - however, please do not underestimate the importance of getting a balanced diet full of nutrients, fibre, amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals as without these factored into your nutrition also it can make managing energy balance much more difficult.

Day 4 – Nutrition . One of the greatest military leaders this world has ever produced, Napoleon Bonaparte once said that: An army marches on its stomach” – that was true in the age of the French revolution and in his wars to follow, but today – most of us are not marching at all, but we still eat as if we were – including me. #Nutrition is one of the three main building blocks to becoming #healthy (the others being sleep and exercise), since I am currently fat, I can use my #fat as fuel, and therefore only needs to eat 80% of what my body needs to survive. I have used the Katch-McArdle Formula to calculate how many calories I must eat pr. day if I want to stay at my current weight, and even better how few I must eat if I want to lose weight. For me, I will lose weight if I eat around 1800 calories pr. day, so that’s what I am doing, I then recalculate as I loose weight. To keep track of how many calories I am eating, I use two techniques, that makes things as simple as possible: Firstly: I “automate” as many meals as possible, meaning that I just eat exactly the same things, at the same time each day. In that way I have already calculated that the nutritions and #calories fits my program, and I don’t have to think one second about it, before I eat it. On of those staples is this @nutramino protein shake whitch constitutes my first meal at around 06:30 am every day. Secondly: I use #myfitnesspal to make rough calculations on how many calories there is, in any given meal. Ideally I therefore make as much food as I can by myself, or buy “automated” food as mentioned before. Theres a lot more to write about macros, timing of eating etc. this will come in the following days – stay hard!

If you really want to get fit you have to also focus on sleep, proper hydration, eating quality foods and not just foods that are low in calories. My goal is not to be skinny, but to get fit. The word bulking has negative connotations with many guys. Excessive weight gain is not only unnecessary in a proper bulk; it should be avoided for several reasons. Being overweight comes with all kinds of health risks, as most people know, but it also accelerates fat storage and gets in the way of building muscle. How? 1.)Because as body fat levels rise, insulin sensitivity drops 2.)which in turn impairs your body’s ability to burn fat and increases the likelihood that it will store carbohydrates as fat Excessive weight gain during a “dirty” bulk impairs muscle growth and makes undoing the weight gain even harder. A much smarter way to bulk is to provide a low-to-moderate caloric surplus that allows for steady muscle growth while minimizing fat storage. A proper bulk should give you about .25-.50kgs or 0.5–1.5 lbs. of weight gain per week, and here’s a simple way to work this out - If you eat like this for 10–14 days and haven’t gained weight, you should up your calories by about 200 per day to see if that fixes it. - If after another 10–14 days your weight is still stuck, simply bump your calories up again. Can’t believe I’m heading into the last week of my 6 week challenge!! Fair to say I’ve given it my all in terms of hitting the gym 6 times a week and giving my workouts 90% effort (minusing 10% due to having to alternsome exercises for my bad knee).
