myjamaicatoday. The Jamaica Association of Public Health Inspectors (JAPHI) is calling

The Jamaica Association of Public Health Inspectors (JAPHI) is calling on all Jamaicans to take full responsibility for their own personal and environmental health, recognizing that it is primarily through their individual preventive and control actions that the outbreak can be successfully controlled. The Association says, at least once per week people must search for and destroy all mosquito breeding sites around premises they occupy including homes, schools, workplaces, places, child care facilities, homes for the aged, places of worship, garages/tyre shops and other premises. JAPHI says Public Health Inspectors and the support vector control staff across Jamaica are encouraged to increase their vigilance in order to mitigate the risk of morbidity (illness) and mortality (death), through vector control, general environmental sanitation activities, health education and carrying out enforcement actions. If individuals suspect they may have dengue fever, they should visit the health centre or your doctor to be examined. Use pain relievers with acetaminophen, and avoid medicines with aspirin, which could cause or worsen bleeding. Drinking plenty of fluids is important. They are also reminding people to protect themselves against mosquito bites. “If anyone in your home gets dengue fever, be vigilant to protect yourself and other family members from mosquito bites. Mosquitoes that bite the infected family member could spread the infection to others in your home,” JAPHI says...Visit Our Website https://bit.ly/2sCKhLY

With the country on high alert and the dengue epidemic worsening, the need to understand what causes the virus and explore some of the symptoms associated becomes increasingly necessary in the event you or a family member becomes ill. Dengue is a mosquito-borne tropical disease. The signs and symptoms associated with the deadly virus include: · Sudden, high fever · Severe headaches · Pain behind the eyes · Severe joint and muscle pain · Nausea · Vomiting · Skin rash, which appears two to five days after the onset of fever. · Mild bleeding (such as a nose bleed, bleeding gums or easy bruising.) However serious problems may develop and include dengue hemorrhagic fever, enlargement of the liver and failure of the circulatory system. The symptoms may progress to massive bleeding, shock and death, known as dengue shock syndrome. While there is no specific medicine to treat dengue, infected persons are advised to use pain relievers with acetaminophen and avoid medicines with aspirin, as they worsen bleeding. So Panadol and Cetamol are the recommended medications. Rest is very important at this time and infected persons are advised to drink plenty fluids and see your doctor or visit a hospital immediately to be checked and treated in the event a complication arise. Prevention Tips · The best way to avoid Dengue is to prevent mosquito bites. · Use insect repellents that contain Deet when outdoors. · Cover exposed skin by wearing long sleeved shirts, long pants. If you have infants use mosquito nets to cover your child’s crib, stroller, and baby carrier. · Empty and scrub, turn over, cover or throw out any item that holds water, such as tires, buckets trash containers at least once weekly. Be vigilant in destroying mosquito breeding sites. Your health…your responsibility. https://bit.ly/2FCW6JO

The rampant dengue fever outbreak has claimed another victim, this time a 14-year-old teenager, 14 year-old Areel Foster of Central High School in Clarendon. There have been nine suspected deaths thus far from the outbreak. According to media reports, the teenager died at the Kingston Public Hospital on Wednesday morning as a result of a suspected case of dengue fever. Foster was the lead singer for Central High School, which finished fifth in this year’s TVJ’s All Together Sing. “Areel had not returned to school in January, and we had heard that she was sick. She was in the May Pen hospital and then was transferred to the Kingston Public Hospital where she died. She was an angel, the whole school is mourning,” vice principal Christine Lumsden told Jamaica Today. “She was fully involved in the school choir, she gained gold medals at the JCDC contests and we were all captivated by her talent that was on full display during the school’s performances on ‘All Together Sing’,” she added. Areel’s virtuoso performance as a lead vocalist helped propel the school to a top five finish in last season of TVJ’s popular ‘All Together Sing’ contest. “Central High school were first timers in the recent season of All Together Sing and her outstanding talents enhanced the choir’s performance making them Top 5 winners. Central High School won their Schools Challenge Quiz match on Wednesday but we couldn’t even celebrate, we were all depressed with news of her passing. We have taken it really hard,” she said. School administrators took the decision to relocate Areel’s classmates in 9 N to another classroom to assuage the pain of recalling their fallen classmate. “Everything in that classroom was a constant reminder of Areel, she was such a bright spark, a loving, soft-spoken, determined, willing, and committed student, we have lost a true ambassador for the school,” Ms. Lumsden said...See Full Story https://bit.ly/2Hsl9Ca

The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) is predicting that another regional outbreak of Dengue may occur “in the near future” in the Caribbean. CARPHA says the last major regional outbreak of Dengue occurred in 2009. Since then, the Region has experienced two large outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases, Chikungunya in 2014 and Zika in 2016, which, CARPHA says, are unlikely to reoccur soon. However, the regional body says its disease modelling, “predicts that another regional outbreak of Dengue may occur in the near future.” In 2018, Latin America showed an increase in the number of Dengue cases. It says the outbreak of Dengue in Jamaica, announced by Government this month, has elevated the level of concern in other Caribbean islands. The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) is therefore advising countries to implement enhanced measures to reduce mosquito breeding and prevent the spread of disease. CARPHA say Dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases threaten health, tourism, social and economic development, and a collaborative effort is required to reduce the spread of disease. https://bit.ly/2RRj5aG

myjamaicatoday. With the country in the midst of a dengue outbreak, the Chief Medical

With the country in the midst of a dengue outbreak, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Jacqueline Bisasor-McKenzie, is urging public support for the Ministry’s vector control programme. The programme is aimed at containing and reducing the spread of the vector-borne disease. Bisasor-McKenzie, notes that while the Ministry heightens interventions such as fogging, clean-up activities and citizen sensitisation to reduce the prevalence of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits the disease, public participation is equally critical in curtailing breeding of the vector. Dr. Bisasor-McKenzie, who emphasised that the disease is “preventable”, argued that “if we can rid our vicinities of all of the breeding sites, then we can decrease the likelihood of [contracting] dengue”. She was speaking at a recent press briefing at the Ministry’s New Kingston offices. Dr. Bisasor-McKenzie noted that the mosquito, which has a life span averaging two to four weeks, thrives in damp or wet conditions. These, she points out, include areas where water accumulates and containers in which the amenity is stored but not properly monitored. Against this background, the Ministry urges persons to take the following precautionary measures: • Cover stored water • Regularly empty and clean containers in which water has accumulated or is being stored • Punch holes in containers being discarded • Properly discard refuse that has accumulated • Keep grass and shrubbery, which can provide havens for mosquitoes, low • Protect yourselves by wearing long sleeves, especially at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most likely to be active, and • Use mosquito netting and insect repellents frequently as directed on the containers. Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton told the House of Representatives on Tuesday that up to January 3, there were some 830 suspected or presumed cases of dengue across the island. Of that number, 23 have been confirmed. The Minister warned that there was likely to be an increase in the number of cases throughout January, before the numbers taper off by March.
