A blast of inspiration from a flying art trip to London yesterday. The first page shows a selection of details from the paintings I saw and the following pages show complete images. These images relate to four different exhibitions. First stop was Amy Sillman ‘Landline’. A wide ranging exhibition exploring the depth of scope of her distinctive work. @camdenartscentre Second was Joe Bradley’s densely layered expressionist abstracts @gagosian Third was Belgian painter Ilse D’Hollander (1968-1997) @victoriamirogallery and finally, the British painter Richard Smith (1931 -2016) Uptown /Downtown exhibition, featuring a collection of paintings he made in New York between 1959-63 @hazlitthollandhibbert All fascinating and contrasting exhibitions which are worth visiting. I was particularly struck by the sensitive, nuanced semi-abstract landscape paintings of Ilse D’Hollander. Here is an excerpt from the available exhibition information. In 1991, in a rare text written by the artist, D’Hollander explained her creative process; ‘The painting is created out of a convergence of thoughts and the act of painting itself. Thoughts in this case mean I, as a painter, am not standing in front of my canvas as a neutral being but as an acting being that invests itself into the painting...Fundamental remains the act of painting itself with consideration of the person who is painting. Fundamental remains the onlooker, who lays his eyes on my paintings.’ A must see if you happen to be visiting central London before 🎄This show ends on the 21 December.

⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Treasure: 👉 The Birth of Venus - 1879 Artist: 🇫🇷 William-Adolphe Bouguereau #Paris - Musée d’Orsay Photo: 📸@museeorsay Tag: #europe_treasures Family: 🖼 @tesori_italiani 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 The Birth of Venus (French: La Naissance de Vénus) is one of the most famous paintings by 19th-century painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau. It depicts not the actual birth of Venus from the sea, but her transportation in a shell as a fully mature woman from the sea to Paphos in Cyprus. She is considered the epitome of the Classical Greek and Roman ideal of the female form and beauty, on par with Venus de Milo. The Birth of Venus is a large oil on canvas (300x218 cm) that resembles a previous rendition of this subject, Sandro Botticelli's The Birth of Venus and as well as Raphael's The Triumph of Galatea. At the center of the painting, Venus stands nude on a scallop shell being pulled by a dolphin, one of her symbols. Fifteen putti, including Cupid and Psyche, and several nymphs and centaurs have gathered to witness Venus' arrival. Most of the figures are gazing at her, and two of the centaurs are blowing into conch and Triton shells, signaling her arrival. Venus is considered to be the embodiment of feminine beauty and form, and these traits are shown in the painting. To the upper-left of the painting, there is a shadow in the clouds. It appears to be the silhouette of the artist, with a head, shoulder, arm, and a raised fist that would seem to hold a paintbrush. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 #oilpainting #europeanart #artists #artwork🎨 #paintings #frenchartist #cuadros #orsay #frenchart #museedorsay #artiste #painting #france #bouguereau #française #museelouvre #historyofart #venus #museum #français #french #europeart #artfrance #dipinto #peintre #peinture

⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Treasure: 👉 The Glass of Wine - 1658 Artist: 🇳🇱 Johannes Vermeer #Delft - Vermeer Centrum Photo: 📸@vermeercentrumdelft Tag: #europe_treasures Family: 🖼 @tesori_italiani ⠀ ⠀ 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 Vermeer's 'The glass of wine' depicts a woman seated at a table drinking a glass of wine, while an elegantly dressed young man is watching her. Her face is almost hidden by the nearly empty glass. She is elegantly clothed wearing a red satin tabbaard with its dazzling ornate gold brocade suggesting that she has dressed to please her guest. A debonair looking man stands at her side, keeping a respectful distance from her. He looks straight at her with his hand, enclosed by a ruffled cuff, on a porcelain pitcher and seems to be waiting to fill her glass. His drab coloured clothing is in contrast to the woman’s attire and aids the visual divide between the two characters in the painting. A number of song books lie on the table which is covered by a heavy ornamental cloth. On the chair there is a blue cushion on which sits a cittern, a stringed instrument dating from the Renaissance. This is an instrument that often occurs in Vermeer’s pictures and symbolises both harmony and frivolity. His works set the tone for representations of the upper bourgeoisie, a social level more refined than that depicted by his contemporaries. This type of setting required finer and smoother pictorial rendition than, for instance, the Milkmaid. Consequently, Vermeer adapted his brushwork to the new needs. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 #art #europeanart #artists #artwork🎨 #flemish #selfpotrait #portraitpainting #flanders #vermeer #girlwithapearlearring #artiste #kunst #flemishart #rotterdam #flemishgiant #arthistory #holland #museum #hollanda #nederlands #netherlands #netherland #olanda #johannesvermeer #nederland #dutchart #dutchart

There is an earlier, nearly identical version of this painting, which Van Gogh had completed in one sitting. ‘I’d worked on a no. 20 canvas in the open air in an orchard — ploughed lilac field, a reed fence — two pink peach trees against a glorious blue and white sky. Probably the best landscape I’ve done’, he wrote. When he returned home, he saw the death notice of Anton Mauve (1838-1888), his uncle by marriage. Mauve was a well-known painter from whom Van Gogh had once taken lessons. He dedicated that first work to Mauve and made this new version later to send to Theo. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 #oilpainting #europeanart #artists #paintings #cuadros #cuadro #painting #vangoghmuseum #musee #beniculturali30 #kunstwerk #peinture #vincentvangogh #vangogh #vincent #peintre #rotterdam #holland #museum #hollanda #nederlands #netherlands #netherland #olanda #starrynight #nederland #dutchart #dutch

The subject, which he found "beautiful as regards lines and proportions, like an Egyptian obelisk," both captivated and challenged the artist: "It’s the dark patch in a sun-drenched landscape, but it’s one of the most interesting dark notes, the most difficult to hit off exactly that I can imagine." One of two close-up views of the "very tall and massive" trees in a vertical format (the other is in the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo), Cypresses was shown in the 1890 Salon des Indépendants. 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 #oilpainting #europeanart #artists #paintings #cuadros #cuadro #painting #vangoghmuseum #musee #oleosobretela #kunstwerk #peinture #vincentvangogh #vangogh #vincent #peintre #metmuseum #getty #museum #cypress #nederlands #netherlands #netherland #olanda #iris #nederland #dutchart #dutch
