Repost @roar.media A few months ago Roar posted a story about an almost deserted Galle Face, fast forward to mid July and the crowds seem to be returning in small groups of noise and colour. We also came across a cricket game being played by some tourists and their Sri Lankan friends. While we may not have won the World Cup this year, the passion for the sport only continues to bring people closer, seeing us through tough times. #colombo #srilanka #people #everydaysrilanka #humansofsrilanka #humanstories #peopleofsrilanka #galleface #nationalflag #travelsrilanka #visitsrilanka #cricket

Vaada baila in Sri Lanka has evolved greatly since its popularity in the 60s, and today, the undisputed champion of this musical form of debate is Percy Rajapaksha, who has been involved in the circuit for four decades. Rajapaksha, who has won numerous awards over the years, also runs a vaada baila school in Ratmalana, in the hope that the younger generation will take up the art. -- "It's easier for me when they come to us with the ability to put together some rhymes in their head," he told Roar Media. "But we can still teach even if [they] don't!" -- Check out the full story at roar.media Photo Credits: Roar Media / Nazly Ahmed #srilanka #humansofsrilanka #humanstories #peopleofsrilanka #everydaysrilanka #people #culture #vaadabaila #baila #portuguese #kaffir #cafrinha #roarstories

Keeri-malai in Tamil

Keerimalai Naguleswaram temple, Kankasanthurai. Keeri-malai in Tamil means "Mongoose-Hill". The temple is situated adjacent to a set of mineral water springs. A sage called Nagula Muni, shrunk by age and austerity while meditating at a cave in Keerimalai was likened to mongooses that frequented the area. The sage bathed in the springs and was cured of his mongoose face. In gratitude, Nagula Muni constructed a small shrine and worshipped the Lingam enshrined there. This became known as the Thirutambaleswaram Kovil of Keerimalai and also the Naguleswaram Kovil of Keerimalai alluding to the sage. End of story. Sourced off Wikipedia. YAM HAWK MOTH #2-6 — Theretra nessus, on my window sill in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in July 2019. A couple of years ago, I posted photos of a much larger and more colourful specimen, but unfortunately that one was dying. I was lucky that this bugger was trapped inside my living room and was able to snap a few shots before he escaped. #naveenjeremyd Homemade String Hoppers The name idiappa/idiappam derived from the Tamil words idi, meaning “broken down”, and appam, meaning “pancake”. Thought I'll take a photo with all the string hoppers nicely arranged in a plate with pol-sambol, fish and potato curry, well that didn't happen because I was in a hurry to eat. Maybe next time. To make string hoppers (idiappa) the dough is pressed through a metal press which create long stringy noodles. The noodles are squeezed out in a circular pattern onto a cane steamer basket, that is steamed for about 5 to 10 minutes. #idiappa #everydaysrilanka #stringhoppers #visitsrilanka

The dying light of a Saturday evening slashes down upon Colombo. I'm in the back of a car en route to see 'super30'. Smells of toasted coffee and bakery bread stings at my nostrils. My mind is elsewhere, lost in freshly formed memories. I remember this evening because I enjoyed these hours with a heavy heart. It was like enjoying a single bright light in a world of darkness. #colombo #sunset #shotononeplus #oneplusclicks #oneplus7pro #paradiseisland #srilanka #everydaysrilanka

STATION MASTER, DEMODARA, SRI LANKA — Very much the lord of his small realm, a Sri Lanka Railways station master walks the length of a mixed goods and passenger train on its way to Badulla, the end destination of what is now considered one of the world’s great train journeys, and which begins in the country’s capital, Colombo, eight hours away. The route, connecting the western coast to the Central Highlands, was built by the British Empire to transport coffee and, later, tea to their waiting ships in the Colombo Port. Sri Lanka’s railway system has changed little since its switch from coal to diesel, half a century ago, and the route, which winds through some of the world’s most spectacular scenery, is replete with signs from the past. Quaint little rural stations, such as Demodara and Pattipola, are run by station masters in starched white uniforms who hand out railway tokens to the engine drivers, authorising them to use the route; kankanis and naattamis wait to load and unload goods by hand; and the Ceylon Tea served in the restaurant cars is still strong and sweet. Shot on assignment for The @nytimes ; specifically for award-winning Frugal Traveler columnist Lucas Peterson’s piece, “An Island Nation that is Best Savored Slowly”, which ran on 30th January 2019. The first tea plant arrived in Sri Lanka in 1824 from China, as an ornamental plant for a botanical garden.
