A common cue used for someone who loses midline stability is; ‘Stay tight!’ This cue is useful for maintaining a neutral spine for many movements. When it comes to the squat, however, there may be other limitations which can prevent a strong bottom position. If the ankles lack range of motion, as described in the video above, no amount of core contraction will prevent the pelvis from tilting and the lower back from rounding. What’s the use of a good birthday workout if you can’t have some fun and tomfoolery with the trap bar? That’s right every once in a while I like to experiment and try some crazy variations. Sometimes the outcome is better than expected and other times not so much. However, the vertical cambered trap bar squat and goodmornings, as insane and ridiculous as they look, actually turned out to be an effective lower body protocol that some folks might find useful to periodically employ in their training. Here’s why. Over a year ago I posted several variations of the cambered trap bar squat, goodmornings, and lunges highlighting how useful they were for teaching folks to clean up their lower body mechanics. This one also has similar benefits with several unique attributes as well. 1. These were incredibly effective for reinforcing the cue of setting the hips back & avoiding excessive anterior knee drift. That’s because the lifer will be required to maintain a slight hip hinge throughout and load through their heels and hips in order to keep the bottom end of the bar from moving away from them. 2. Similar to the above, these provide immediate feedback about bar path and squat mechanics particularly in regards to anteroposterior shifting. Even the slightest forward body shift will cause the bottom end of the bar to pull out & away from the lifter. To keep the bottom end of the bar close to the body the lifter will be required to produce perfectly vertical force vectors. 3. In order to accommodate the trap bar between the legs, you’re essentially forced to spread your knees & avoid valgus collapse. 4. These require the lifter to produce an incredibly tight shelf for the bar to sit on by keeping the traps, lats, and upper back thoroughly engaged throughout the movement while maintaining a neutral head & cervical spine. Otherwise it feels awful on the back. 5.  These are incredibly shoulder joint friendly as the lifter can keep a low hand position. Like the post yesterday about the Hip Joint, the Shoulder Joint is also meant to rotate. . 🔻 The question is raised once again... If your shoulder DOES NOT rotate or CANNOT rotate, do you even have a shoulder? 🤷🏾‍♂️ 🔻 Have you even checked your shoulder’s capabilities? . 🔻 Do you know how to test/assess the ranges? 🔻 If you swing a Steel Mace you should know how. If you’re teaching people to swing one you should know how. . 🔻 If someone tells you to just swing this tool because you have the strength to do it, then run because they’re lying to you. . 🔻 If you have shoulder pain, before, during or after swinging the mace there’s something wrong. . 🔻 If you are told that this tool will improve your mobility then you’re also being lied to. . 🔻 Shoulder CARs (controller articulated Rotations) are just one aspect of overall joint health and performance. It is in essence “mindful movement” which helps establish a deeper connection between your neurology and the “stuff” involved. Control is the key word here. Control of the “specific” joint to be exact. . 🔻 Once you’ve learned to control the movement you can begin to add additional challenge to broaden your body’s experience. . 🔻 I mean if I see you swinging a mace while lunging and you can’t even control this? 🤷🏾‍♂️ 🔻 I’m just saying. Skill is built on Capacity. 35. Kettlebell mobility/stability exercise: isometric bottom up kettlebell windmill (Stability for thoracic) Grab 1 kettlebell bottom side up and another one on the ground. Push the hip back without bending your back knee (same side as a kettlebell overhead) Try to pick up the bottom kettlebell but don’t actually lift it. Just keep the tension but don’t pick it up. Stay that position 20 to 30 sec. Do a few sets on both side. You feel a big stretch through your upper back! Yesterday I rode my mountain bike for the first time in over 5 months. . I've never taken such a long break from the sport that I fell in love with 4 years ago, but I did so intentionally. . I wanted to see how my body would adapt to winter training of lifting and exclusively riding the road bike. . After finishing my first century ride, I knew it was time to hang up the skinny tires and break out the big ones. . Tuesday's ride was an absolute blast: . I missed the cold crisp air, and the rustling of the trees. I missed seeing deer in the woods. I missed the sound of Minions sliding across rocks. I missed the freedom that comes from being outside. . For me, riding isn't about developing fitness - it isn't about muscles, mitochondria, or miles. It's about using fitness as an instrument of freedom, both of mind and body. . Lifting weights and riding the road bike is about developing my body so that I'm better able to experience the joy that comes with riding a bike offroad. . It's been that way since I had my first BMX bike in elementary school, and we made dirt jumps at the local park. . Riding is about getting lost - and finding myself - at the same time. . This is what I wish for everyone that I know: . Find a non-exercise physical activity that is empowering and deeply meaningful to you. . This is bigger than training for the sake of it. We're training to live a life in which we're truly prepared for all of the beautiful experiences that life has to offer. . Fitness offers freedom. .
