BEST PRACTICES FOR TRACKING HYPERTROPHY PROGRESS - @fitness_walkthrough⠀⠀ -⠀⠀ As those newbie gains peter out, it gets harder and harder to objectively track progress. For the mid-stage intermediate lifter, this especially becomes true. Here are a few “best practices” I like to employ to ensure progress can be assessed accurately:⠀⠀ -⠀⠀ 1 - Run training blocks consecutively, back-to-back so you can directly compare performance while minimizing variables. You should track and compare ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) to determine if progress is being made (if RPE is going down, then you know progress is being made even if reps and weights are the same).⠀⠀ -⠀⠀ 2 - Use rep PRs across sets to gauge progress for hypertrophy rather than one rep max tests or “one-and-done” AMRAPs. Your work capacity going up in muscle-building rep ranges will be more representative of hypertrophy than isolated tests in 1RM strength. Stalls and plateaus are totally normal and should not be feared.⠀⠀ -⠀⠀ 3 - Pay attention to single-joint isolation work and keep a record of your best volume PR each mesocycle. If your strength and/or work capacity is going up on something as simple as a bicep curl, this is a VERY good sign you are growing.⠀⠀ -⠀⠀ 4 - Take progress photos and accurate girth measurements of each muscle group and keep a record. A tip I picked up from @andy_rippedbody is to take 3 measurements and record the average. This will help minimize fluctuations.⠀⠀ - ⠀⠀ Want to add to my list? Post a comment below.
