#ThrowbackThursday to 1951 when Prince's Drive-Ins owner Doug Prince greets University of Houston co-eds while carhop Joy Rezzoffi brings out their order. The last Prince's in Houston is closing. Don't worry, they'll be back. Also, note what appears to be a jukebox at left. Big Mamma lived in this house and took  in over 50 children who needed a home over the decades of living next to the Gregory School. Big Mamma represented a real spirit of compassion. This house still stands as you can see. Swipe left.

This is what I LOVE about being located where we are is the History...the opportunity to preserve as much of Houston’s Music History. History walks in here every week...Today, we have Mr. Wells. Mr Wells owned the Wells Lounge and Pool Hall off of Market St in the 5th Ward. He was around when Johnny Ace got shot...he’s 84yrs old. Was a Roofer most of his life. And has better hearing and memory than I do. — Don’t forget your past. It’s your’s. If you don’t look for it and hold on to it, it’ll be gone forever. International Cisterns: The Portuguese Cistern of El Jadida. This cistern above (photographed by Theophania, an @atlasobscura user) is located in the village of El Jadida in Morocco. Before the city was occupied by Moroccans, the Portuguese occupied the area and constructed churches, a synagogue, and this historic water reservoir. This particular one was the backdrop for Orson Welles' Othello in 1951! Lucky for you, you don't need to travel overseas to view a historic relic like this. Posted @withrepost@depelchinchildrenscenter #BlackHistoryMonth: In the 1930's, #Houston was still a city divided by race, and there was a gap of resources to help African American children. #DePelchin responded by opening the Negro Child Center to offer residential and foster care services for children in need. In 1960, a new DePelchin unit specifically begins seeking adoptive homes for black and Hispanic children as well as youngsters with disabilities and special needs. . . . . . . . #FFO #FemmeForte #FemmeForteOrg #FemmeForteOrganization #Adoption #FosterCare #HoustonHistory

Very excited to get my hands on this album without completely breaking the bank. Deerfield were a band from Houston TX that released a lone studio LP entitled Nil Desperandum in 1971 on their own record label, Flat Rock Records. It was recorded at their own studio in the Heights neighborhood, just outside of downtown. While it’s a country rock album at its core, there’s notable influences from late ‘60s California bands (CSNY and the Grateful Dead especially), funk, and blues as well. First heard about his record from the @thenumerogroup Cosmic American Music compilation. The whole record is solid, but standout tracks include the final two on the LP, Me Lovin’ You, which is probably the most overtly country song in the record, and Riverside. #vinyl #nowspinning #houston #houstonmusic #houstonhistory

Great article written by University of Houston professor about the history of the Ranch Style home. Naturally, it mentions Frank Sharps developments in Oak Forest & Sharpstown and The Tanglewood Corporations luxury Ranch Style homes spurred by Gerald Hine’s Galleria. Black History Month . The term "buffalo soldiers" refers to the men who served in the four all-black Army regiments founded after the Civil War. According to legend, the name was bestowed by Native people who thought the soldiers' hair looked like buffalo fur. Other lore contends it was due to the soldiers' fierceness in battle. The all-black regiments patrolled new settlements in the West, built infrastructure that helped make westward expansion possible, and fought in every U.S. war after the Civil War until the U.S. Army was desegregated in 1948. . Houston has the honor of having a great museum dedicated to these men. @buffalosoldiermuseum . Today Bishops Houston honors this part of our collective history. Bring in a used ticket from the museum and we will give you a free shampoo treatment if you get a haircut or style... . #buffalosoldier #houstonhistory #blackhistorymonth #differenttogether #respect #sacrifice

My inspiration... Representative Barbara Charline Jordan Occupation: lawyer, politician, teacher: Texas Senate 1967-1973, U.S. House of Representatives 1973-1979; professor of political ethics at University of Texas, Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs; chair of U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform Dates: February 21, 1936 - January 17, 1996 Barbara Jordan had a lot of firsts in her career and life. She was the first African-American to be elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction, the first southern black female to be elected to the United States House of Representatives, and the first African-American woman to deliver the keynote address at a Democratic National Convention. Furthermore, she became the first black woman to be buried in the Texas State Cemetery. An active politician and leader of Civil Rights Movement, she dedicated her living working for the rights of the blacks. Influential and hardworking, Jordan strived for excellence right from a young age. Since high school days, she showed a talent for debating and oratorical skills. She soon became active in politics and carved a niche for herself and went on to become a member of the United States House of Representatives. #blackhistorymonth #africanamericanhistory #barbarajordan #womeninpolitics #blackwomeninpolitics #melaninmagic #texassenate #texassenator #unitedstateshouseofrepresentatives #melaninpoppin #africanamericanhistory #blackwomenmagic #blackwomanmagic #houstontx #houstonhistory #houstonblackbusiness #blacksuccess #barbarajordanhighschool #entrepreneurs #womenatwork
