. The beautiful magic of destiny, Cuba. . This evening I went out for a walk along the Malecon in Havana. As I walked, I encountered this young couple, Yanial, 33, and Arelis, 30, as the light was dropping, and there was something very profound in their demeanor towards each other. I briefly introduced myself in Spanish, and in deep silence, I made photographs for several minutes. I saw and felt a beautiful moment, and I shared with them that I had just returned to Cuba, and as I had surgery to have my left knee replaced one month before, this was my first leisurely walk, and meeting them and making this photograph was important to me. As I walked away, Yanial called out in Spanish, "Peter, please come back". I came back, and they both looked at me and said, "we want to share with you that this is our first night out together. We met only three days ago, by accident, as we both were walking down the street". I told them, love and destiny, like beautiful photographs, don't happen by accident. And everything about this moment felt like it was supposed to happen. You'll forgive me if I have small tears as I write this. It was supposed to happen. . © Peter Turnley, Havana, Cuba, Jan. 15, 2019. . .

. In honor of James Baldwin, who I photographed in Paris in 1986, and in tribute to so many who have fought to make our world a better place-I wish all a beautiful New Year, and hope that at this moment, when the leadership of the country of my origin is so untethered from any sense of moral compass-I hope this will be a year when everyone with a heart will stand up stronger for a more humane vision of our world, and embrace every member of our human family and find glory in the beauty and power of our collective and diverse human rainbow. Our power and strength is not defined by the daily results of the Dow Jones, nor by the economic success of a status quo of a privileged relative few. It is defined by every child being judged only by the content of their character, and everyone having equal opportunity to education and healthcare, and by the diversity of our collective human family. . Happy New Year. . © Peter Turnley, Paris, 1986. . .

The guy who murdered my father was released from jail. He killed someone else recently. I went to court to support the victim’s family. The judicial system is messed up. How is this allowed to happen again? My Mother is constantly worried about our safety since my Dad’s murderer was released after his inequitable sentence of 10yrs. But I’m expected to be civil through all of this? I have a lot on my mind..
