Me & Masculinity: I was recently invited by activewear brand @lululemonausnz to be part of a three day event at a winery outside of Melbourne along with 30 athletic, manly, Australian men, who were all doing good things in their communities. My initial answer was 'fuck, no!’ That's a nightmare for me. Why? Because I don't like men very much (I relate better to women), I especially don't like groups of men and I especially, especially don't like groups of Australian sporting men. The good thing is though... I do like growth. My aversion to this event, that initial visceral repulsion meant only one thing; that there was growth to be had there. One of my faults is that I stereotype too much. I write a lot of people off before getting to know them because of past behaviours of people that 'look like them'. You'll be happy to know that I was wrong. These boys defied the stereotypes and showed me, taught me, that the state of masculinity isn't as bad as I make it out to be. Even if they are only the tip of the spear of change, it was wonderful to watch them get vulnerable, open, empathetic and share themselves honestly with everyone else there. I gained some insights, so I wrote them in an article.
