▫️⏳10 minutes into 1⌛️▫️ ________________________________________________________ Today was all about getting back into the swing of things. Was sidelined for the last few days and basically spent all of the last 72 hours on the couch 😷🤢 Still not 100% but I got my behind to work and had a large gap between clients. As stiff as a board from all the sitting and laying around, my 18 year old self was saying “LETS GO SLAP ON 405 ON THE BAR AND DEADLIFT”. While my 28 year old self (damnit I’m getting old) slapped some sense into me and told me to take it easy and go through some stretches and mobility drills... ________________________________________________________ Moral of the story is DONT BE 18 YEAR OLD MIKE and listen to you body. You know it best and you know when you’re at your peak performance level. You also know when things aren’t clicking. So do what 28 year old Mike did and scale it back accordingly. I know many are over this #10yearchallenge thing -BUT i do have something important to say (At least for those that follow me for fitness tips etc). - Social media lies to you. (in case you didn’t already know). - First let’s address the fact that the image on the left is not post-workout and also day 1 of a holiday so zero tan also!👻 - These tricks of the trade are the standard on all #fitspo instagram accounts. Myself included. - I think we can agree despite this there is obvious progress and change however, (other than the few grey patches.👴🏼) - But this is 10 YEARS! Many people chasing transformations (in this case muscle gain) expect/want this level of change in 12 weeks. Because again, the majority of social media LIES to you and tells you its possible. - This is not to say significant transformations can’t take place within 12 weeks –particularly when fat loss is the sole goal– BUT, most people aren’t aware of many other factors that determine some of the more dramatic transformations they see online when muscle-gain is also the goal. - Lets address some of the factors (there are many more than i’ve listed, but these spring to mind first). - DISHONESTY: The obvious one: Some transformations utilise substance ‘assistance’.💉 Let me be clear: i hold no judgement on those that choose to put whatever they want to into their bodies. If they lie about it and deny use while telling their customers similar physiques can be achieved ‘naturally’ with their training plans, then I DO have an issue with it. - TIMETABLE: The fortunate few that find themselves with an Athlete-style timetable (or close to): A days responsibilities consist solely of Eat-Sleep-Train-Repeat. I always say "If you don't use it, you don't get to keep it." This lady is keeping her movement top notch fo shiz!!! 👊🏼 . So many people think and accept that just because they’re 50/40/30...etc, and sadly this number seems to be dropping, that their movement would deteriorate and that pain is inevitable. These days I find myself running quite a lot in situations where one would usually walk. When I leave my house to go to teach at the studio and I feel tired and not too motivated, I just run. Even just a few meters! When you move, run, jump, practice yoga or any kind of movement takes your body out of its daily stubborn range of motion - walking, sitting, lying down - you feel the energy change immediately. Your breathing pattern changes, bringing in fresh energy, silencing thought patterns that are just as repetitive and stubborn as the usual daily movements of your body, replacing them with a feeling of freshness and freedom and maybe even with new inspiration. I once heard; when you work out, you breathe more, when you breath more, you love more.... I do feel this is true. My neighbors might think I’m crazy, and I have to laugh about myself sometimes too - I’m such a kid. But when I laugh about myself, all is accomplished, my energy has changed and I can’t wait to go to work or to do whatever I left to do... I’m being guided through slow, sweet motion in a warm pool, and I hold my breath when I’m asked to by two small squeezes. Then we go under and I’m a fish, no I’m in a womb, I’m a dolphin in the lightness of my body and my movements are as free as they’ve ever been. . I’m trusting these soft, sweeping movements through the water, I’m astounded at how little I need to breathe. I’m not thinking at all, then I have a memory of knowing this watery place once before, before I ever knew anything else. . I had my first experience of aguahara yesterday. It was the most held, free and connected I’ve felt in a long time. . It’s something like a non-monogamous relationship between contact improv in water, watsu, acro and synchronised swimming. I feel pretty connected via acro to the felt sense of trust and surrender, but aguahara took it to a different dimension. It’s medicine. . Thank you @selectorxl for sharing this experience with me. Ya win some, ya lose some 🤷🏻‍♀️ I got used to the *cold* weather (for me anything under 65* is cold) after about 10 minutes and my only goal was to try and run ONE mile to time it- as a starting point since my goal for the next few weeks is to make it faster. So what did I do? I went all out and burned out 2 minutes later. Not only did I go out way too fast, but my dang leggings are too big and slid down. So now, here I am running down the street with my pants sagging and me huffing and puffing trying to figure out what the hell I’m actually doing. Trying to tell myself to pace it and slow down. So I start over. I think, it’s cool that was literally a 1/4 mile. Get it together, that was a warm up. Tried again... failed again. Pants down further after hiking them up. I tried FIVE times guys, each time thinking that my pants will stay up, I won’t sprint off again and praying there are no spiders hanging from the trees. I felt like I was starting all over from scratch- like the first time I ran over a 1.5 miles without stopping. On the bright side of things... the stars were crazy bright tonight. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND PLANES OF MOTION — NO MATTER YOUR LEVEL OF FITNESS. Every movement you have ever done, or ever will do, occurs across a defined plane of motion. Injuries and chronic pain are often the result of compensations and movement pattern disorders that stem from our body’s “macro-movements”. To put it simply, the better you move, the better you’ll feel. Additionally, by training planes of motion, you can begin to improve your proprioception. . What’s proprioception? Think of proprioception as your awareness of your body’s movements. With the help of sensory signals, your brain is able to constantly develop an understanding of how your body is positioned and moving. It’s what allows you to touch your nose with your eyes closed, or throw a ball without watching your arm the entire time. . Without proprioception, we would not be able to understand how, when, and where to more — or how much force to apply to a given movement. . Poor proprioception leads to a lack of balance, dysfunctional directional movements, habitual bad posture, joint and muscle imbalances, and ultimately injury. . The best way to improve your proprioception and avoid chronic pain and injury is to understand planes of motion…and practice them. . 👉🏼 YOU SHOULD MOVE IN WAYS THAT YOU DON'T OFTEN MOVE. When you get stuck in the same movement patterns everyday, you begin to limit your proprioception. . Perhaps you constantly reach for things in front of you at your desk, but never anything at your side. Believe it or not, a chronic movement like this can lead to joint or muscle imbalance and cause an upward rotation of the scapula and impingement of the AC joint, creating chronic pain in the shoulder. . Beginning to understand planes of motion is the first step to improving your proprioception and alleviating postural imbalances and chronic pain. I am an addict.🤭 . I’m an addict in making people happy🥴. . BUT…. . I realized it’s sabotaging my happiness.🤧 . I care so much what people are thinking, what they are saying, talking behind my back, I just care tooo much. . I try to do everything I can to get everyone’s needs in place because I want them to be happy, even tho in reality I know I can’t make everyone happy, but I still try. . I realized it’s only making it worse and I am self sabotaging. So instead of trying to make everyone happy I have to focus on what is going to make me happy, so things can flow naturally. . What’s crazy is today I was listening to a Podcast with @cayla.craft Mommy Millionaire and her guest Tracey O’Malley and the title was “Say Goodbye to Self-Sabotage. . Without knowing what it was exactly about, I thought it was pretty ironic to listen to it. I realized I need to stop my Self-Sabotage. . We all have our own addiction.. Yo! It was so bad that I legitimately feel like no one wanted to stand next to me becuz I was so off! I could feel myself getting smaller and smaller as class progressed. I went from standing upstage center to basically the wings 😔 And I could even hear myself apologizing for my inability to keep up. I felt like I was ruining the choreo and f****** up everyone else's vibes. Even stepped out of my group at the end when it was time to go full out. Basically I wanted to cry. How? How after this many years can shit still be this hard?? But I kept at it and didn't cry lol. Instead I hopped in again to give it a go. Know why? BC the truth is I love the way moving feels. Don't always love the way it looks... I see lots of things I want to change. But if I had to choose between what I can do today vs not being able to dance at all... I would choose today in a heartbeat. And honestly, it's none of my business what someone else thinks of my practice... unless of course they're directing or paying me. In this case neither of those 2 were the case. And stepping off to the side and quitting isn't getting me any closer either.
