One of the great things about being in the wilderness is...no phone service! Not only does it teach us to engage with one another and have deep conversations, but we start noticing all kinds of little details. The only details worthy of distracting us from those deep conversations, really. Whether it’s a bald eagle soaring overhead or magic light on the grass, those are the kinds of interruptions I live for. When we forget about our devices and fully unplug, it makes us feel more human — and less like tap-happy robots. Being able to appreciate nature in that pure of a form is special, and it’s not something we get to experience every day. I’m feeling so very grateful to have shared all of these things (and more, lol!) with a rad group of women on the @andshesdopetoo retreat in Wyoming last week. ✌️🌿

A Galah (Eolophus roseicapilla) seen foraging for seeds here in Alice Springs, Australia. From the northern tropical city of Darwin all the way down to Hobart in Tasmania, Galahs are abundant across Australia thanks to human activity. These cockatoos primarily eat seeds, so the active planting of lawns and farming across the continent has provided enough food for these birds to flourish alongside human. Their name stems from the anglicized version of the word from the Yuwaalaraay language, spoken by the traditional aboriginal tribes in northern New South Wales . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #birds #bird #birdsofinstagram #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifeofinstagram #animals #animalphotography #nature #naturephotography #aussie #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #natgeoinspires #cockatoo #galah #travel #travelphotography #canon #canonphoto #canonphotography #cute #cuteanimals #photography #picoftheday #photooftheday #outback #birding #science #biology

To be a wildlife photographer, one has to be a little weird. Or crazy. Or both. 😂 I am childlishly enjoying climbing trees as often as I can. I mean, who said life has to be booring just because you grow up? . What about you, do you climb trees too? 😀 . . . #focusnordic #lowepro #welovelowepro #asia #natgeoinspires #explore #womenwhoexplore #rainforest #explore #wildlife #wildlifeaddicts #followme #adventure #travel #followme #passionpassport #seetheworld #adventureculture #backpackerlife #life #beachlife @unumdesign #unumfam

As someone who's always cold, it isn't natural for me to want to jump into a glacial lake. But at the end of this hike, sweaty and tired from swiping through the brushy, grown-over trail, we were all ready for a swim. I didn't exactly jump—more like tiptoed out till I was waist-deep, the most torturous means of entering any body of water. Then I dunked under to my shoulders—once was enough—a successful bath. Freezing? Yes. Refreshing? Questionable. Would do again? Absolutely. 🌟 Psst - I threw some things I've picked up from backpacking in my Stories. Would love to hear some of your own go-to backpacking tips.

New travel blog post on our 10-day trip to Italy, where we visited Rome and Florence. We explored, ate a lot, learned to cook, indulged and learned about Italian wines, hunted for truffles, saw amazing museums and other historical sites, and came home feeling more cultured than ever. Read all about it on our blog - Travel by Killoran and check out our Instastories. 🇮🇹🍷🍝❤️ www.travelbykilloran.com • • • • • #travelbykilloran #thekilloranstakeitaly

Colossal crabs may hold clue to Amelia Earhart

Photo by @gabescarlett Colossal crabs may hold clue to Amelia Earhart fate Does the secret of the famed aviator’s disappearance lie in the underground haunts of the world’s largest land invertebrate? NIKUMARORO ISLAND, KIRIBATIThe coconut crabs on the island of Nikumaroro are longer than a reporter’s notebook, wider than an archaeologist’s trowel, and roughly the same size as an explorer’s hiking boot. As the largest land invertebrate on the planet, coconut crabs can measure up to three feet across and clock in at over nine pounds. In short, they are too big. Photo by @andreapistolesi In 897, the corpse of a pope was exhumed to be put on trial. Known as the 'Cadaver Synod,' the posthumous trial of Pope Formosus resulted from the chaos of the ninth century as factions battled for control of the church. IT MUST HAVE been a shock for the poor Roman fisherman who, according to legend, pulled up the body of a dead pope from the Tiber River. Few people would ever have expected to dredge up the remains of a pontiff who, nine months after his death, was at the center of on of the most bizarre episodes in the history of the papacy: a posthumous trial of a corpse. The story of Pope Formosus and the indignities suffered by his mortal remains embodied the tangled politics of late ninth-century Europe. A quick glance at the list of popes in that era shows that Christian concord was notably absent from Rome and the Vatican: Instead, there was chaos. Between 872 and 965, no fewer than 24 popes were coronated in Rome (between 896 and 904, there was roughly one pope appointed per year!) Occupational hazards of the papacy included being deposed, thrown in prison, or murdered. The high rate of papal turnover could be attributed to both political intrigue and government instability. • • • #mountains #italy #adventure #babyhiking #family #mountainlovers #mountainslife #kids #baby #dolomites #dolomiti #hiking #mountainphotography #italianmountains #mountainsphoto #italianalps #natgeoinspires #natgeophotography #mountainviews #mountainscapes #passionemontagna #montagnachepassione #montagne_my_life #instamountains #trekkingitalia #instatrekking #instanatura #instanaturalplaces #naturaphotographylover #instanaturelovers
