One of the most rewarding things about being a PhD student is the research team that I'm a part of. Our research is called the NEW (Nutritious Eating with Soul) Study. It is a 2-year study that looks to improve overall health amoung African-Americans. The participants are assigned to one of two groups, vegan or omnivore (omni), with an emphasis on low-fat southern cuisines. Tonight we made vegan crab cakes! ⁣⁣ Seeing this research come to life is inspiring. My advisor, Dr. Gabrielle Turner-McGrievy allows me to lead the physical activity component, the demos, or put together lessons for classes. 2 years is a long time especially when it comes to something as intimate as diet, food, and lifestyle. Do not mistake excess body fat for “bulk”! . How much water? Half your body weight in ounces??? Is it ever too much water??? Should men and women drink the same amount? All great questions. Lately all I hear about is drink a gallon of water each day or half your body weight in water... but I’m going to share some facts (National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine): For the typical healthy adult living in moderate climate ... Men: 15.5 cups and Women: 11.5 cups per day. Remember you get water through foods, juices, coffee etc. Can you over do “water”? Yes. Fact: Your kidneys can only process 27 - 34 oz of water per hour. More than that you put yourself in a danger zone. Excessive water intake while exercising in hot weather can lead people to hyponatremia. Ie marathon runners, outdoor sports lasting more than an hour. Your body sweats out all of your electrolytes resulting in dehydration, nausea and dizziness. At which point, the athlete or weekend warrior needs to replenish his/her electrolytes with sport drinks and appropriate foods. Basically it’s not a one size fits all answer. But you can safely drink 1 (8oz) glass a water each hour that you are awake. That’s called chipping away at a daily goal without being overwhelmed by a jug or gallon of water staring at you. Find doable ways to hit your goals. Don’t set yourself up for what may feel like the impossible. Break it down! :) #water #goals #challenge #habits

Crumble noisette sur courge butternut 1 courge butternut 4 œufs 50 g de noisettes concassées 10 g de fécule de pomme de terre  10 g de parmesan  1 verre de lait d’amande  1 pincée de muscade  1 pincée de poivre Éplucher et couper la courge en dés. Faire cuire dans une casserole d'eau (la texture doit pouvoir être traversée facilement par un couteau), égoutter. Pendant ce temps, faire griller les noisettes à la poêle. Écrasez la courge à la fourchette, ajoutez le lait d’amande, 2 œufs, la muscade. Bien mélanger, saler & poivrer. Pour faire le crumble, mélanger les noisettes, la fécule de pomme de terre avec 2 œufs et le parmesan. Verser dans des petits ramequins la courge et saupoudrer la pâte à crumbe au-dessus. Missing breakfast, running out the door, commuting 35 minutes in traffic to work and making it with literally 3 minutes to spare. I remember getting my monthly paycheck (yes monthly, that sh*t sux) and it was so much less then I had expected. I felt like I worked endless days and hours but my checks never cut it for me. I was late on bills, in a crazy amount of debt, never had any money to buy groceries, hang out with friends, or just to go out and enjoy life. I remember scrolling across an ad like this one thinking “that stuff isn’t real.. how do you work from home and make over $4,000 in a month?” So me being the go getter I am...
