Moments of the quietest quiet I’ve experienced in a long time. My amazing and beautiful sister @jillianshupe and I have both been long overdue for a day in the place that inspires and fills us up the most. For about a minute and a half no one talked or moved, the dogs didn’t bark and there was not one sound of nearby civilization. In those quiet moments today my soul sighed, my body sighed and my spirit soared. It’s easy to forget how stirring and how vital that kind of quiet is. I’m making a promise to myself to get more of that in my life. Today healed me in ways I didn’t even realize I needed. ↟

Black Hills ~ Dan Simmons - I've been focusing on other stuff lately and have been sort of bored while making my way through Black Hills. It's well written and interesting but it's not really what I wanted in a book lately so I've been primarily diving back into Lovecraft material I never read previously and that's been great. - Black Hills is another of Dan Simmons' historical fiction novels and had less of The Terror's horror aspects to hold me enthralled but was still well worth the read. An 11 year old Lakota named Paha Sapa, despite his disinterest in becoming a warrior, follows a group of his brothers to a battle with the 7th Cavalry where he plans to count coup among the dead. He stumbles across a dying George Armstrong Custer and touches the man the moment his spirit leaves his body. Paha Sapa spends almost the rest of his life, which takes him to many interesting places which include working on Mount Rushmore, inhabited by the spirit. He grapples with identity, spiritually and politics as he makes his way through a world which does not readily accept him mostly alone. - #BlackHills #pahasapa #dansimmons #constantreader #stephenkingfans #novel #books #instabook #bookish #bookworm #booksofinstagram #reading #amreading #booklover #bookphotography #bookstagram #historicalfiction #fiction #horrorfans #hardcover

Not a bad day at the office. Got to spend yesterday absorbing knowledge about Black Hills geology from one of our amazing emeritus faculty members. This section contains the Pahasapa (thick limestone cliffs at the top), underlain by the Englewood, then Winnipeg shale, followed by the Cambrian Deadwood (~0.55 Ga), and finally Precambrian metamorphic rocks (~1.8 Ga). Rapid Creek visible at the base of the valley. This is 20 minutes from campus, btw. #PahaSapa #HifromSD

Hey, Rapid City. If you’re out and about, swing by #tallyssilverspoon for breakfast and a chat with President Reagan. And I hear President Adams delivers a good discourse and a mean cup of coffee. Some of my not posted indigenous pics. Love this one. Here I look like some chief, not that young as was 30 winters ago, now watching to a farness and trying to see a future for him and his tribe in the paints of burning sunset under the great Black Hills. Happy Native American Heritage Month! There’s something so special about being back in my tribe’s sacred land. Paha Sapa and Hehan Kaga Paha are always a welcoming site. In honor of this month, I encourage everyone to remember that no matter where you go, you are always on Indigenous Land. Mitakuye Oyasin!

↟ POST THANKSGIVING MUSING ↟ There is so much I have to be thankful for, I can’t explain how much in just this one post. I try to be thankful everyday and to express my gratitude often. I love that we have a day every year that is dedicated to simply being thankful, I can’t think of anything better to honor and recognize. ↟ Yet, always on Thanksgiving Day and those that follow I feel a heaviness. A sadness. Did you know that many of the First Nations Native American people see thanksgiving as The National Day of Mourning? I can see why. This is where the heaviness comes from for me. I love celebrating being thankful, but I hate celebrating a colonizing holiday that represents the systematic genocide of the the very people we are supposedly celebrating. Thanksgiving is only the beginning of the story of what happened between the settlers and the people who had been living on this land long before all the white men arrived. What happened time and time again to the indigenous people of North America is still happening today. ↟ I always have to honor that. To mourn with my Native brothers and sisters on that day because it breaks my heart. At the very least we must acknowledge and honor the privilege it is that we get to be here on this land. Let’s stop telling that old story of the first thanksgiving and start telling the truth. It’s the least we can do. ↟ And while we are at it...fuck Black Friday. #optoutside
