Today is Denim Day, a day where we can wear our jeans with purpose to protest victim-blaming myths about rape. It began when the conviction of a rapist was overturned when a judge ruled that because the victim had been wearing tight jeans, she must have helped him to remove them which surely implied consent. The next day, women in the Italian Parliament protested by wearing jeans, and the protest lives on every April 24th. That was 1998. While some progress has been made, it was just last year that a man was acquitted for rape because the victim wore lacy thong, which also remarkably implied consent. I can't tell you how much it pains me that people in this world need to be told that one doesn't select their attire as a means of preemptively consenting to sex with whatever person decides they want some. But some people apparently still don't understand that. And the issue runs so much deeper than that. Wearing your denim today is one way to show solidarity. But what's much more important is educating yourself and speaking up. Most survivors I have spoken to feel their story is complicated. Many of us have gone through a period of denial or self-blame. I believe this is a symptom of the harmful gap that exists between how we as a society want to believe rape and its aftermath looks and the reality of how it looks. So today I ask you to go read up on the issue. Talk to a survivor in your life if you know one who wants to share. If there's some resource or information you have found valuable, feel free to comment and share it. I'd love to see. P.S. 🐄🐃🐄🐃🐄🐃🐄🐃🐄🐃 A couple of years ago, I heard this profound tidbit in a podcast that’s stuck with me ever since. It’s about a fascinating behavioral difference between cows and buffalo, and the way they each react to incoming storms in the Plains (one of the only places 🌎 where both animals live). . You see, when cows see a storm incoming, they run away from the storm — which, if you know anything about cows, means that their fear-driven response traps them under said storm far longer than if they’d just stood still and waited for it to pass, because cows are not built to outrun storms... or most things. Nature’s sprinters they are not. 🤷🏻‍♀️ . Buffalo, on the other hand, stand and wait for the dark clouds to pass over the crest of the closest peak before charging directly into the storm. This one behavioral difference means that the buffalo spend a fraction of the time the cows do under the exact same storm — all because they face it head-on rather than trying to escape the downpour. . I know I’ve spend a lot of my life making decisions from a place of fear or avoidance... and likely ended up punishing myself far longer than necessary as a result. What the buffalo do might seem like recklessness, but their willingness to confront what’s challenging instead of fruitlessly seeking a way out sets a potent example for resisting the siren song of aversion. After all, haven’t we all experienced that nagging sense of deja-vu when some version of an annoying setback just keeps on showing up, over and over again? As the old saying goes, lessons don’t go away until you learn them. Are we pointlessly running with the storm and just hoping it will pass? . We can’t outrun life’s storms, so we better get comfortable with confronting the rain head-on. Sure, we might get drenched, but we were always going to get rained on in this life anyways. . To enter this asana, the practitioner should begin in Ardha Pincha Mayurasana (Dolphin Pose). Keeping the forearms and elbows firm and flat against the mat, the feet walk forward until the torso is nearly vertical. With the support of a strong core, the legs are lifted or kicked up so that the torso becomes completely vertical and the body balances on the arms. The legs can hang freely in a bent position, or more advanced practitioners can straighten them and extend the whole body to the sky. Pincha Mayurasana is also known as forearm stand or peacock feather pose in English. This asana gets its name from the fact that it resembles the peacock lifting its tail to show its colorful plumage. Benefits: Pincha Mayurasana is thought to increase blood flow to the brain, which reduces stress and promotes feelings of clarity and peace. It also strengthens the whole body, especially the shoulder and core muscles. Inversions like pincha mayurasana help open the ajna, or third eye chakra. The position of the head and the thoughtful gaze toward the mat allow energy to flow to the third eye, enhancing the practitioner's mental and psychic abilities. Just being realistic here...if I ever waited until I was 100% feeling better, I would never have found yoga in the first place! I wonder how many people found yoga as a result of not feeling ‘good’ or balanced. Oh, I did fo’sho!!! Shoes on today to help protect the toe. I’ve been taking some risks & I’m not quite sure they’re in my toe’s best interest. It’s just so hard to resist when there are so many dope things I want to try & shoes are just down right BULKY!!! .
