Bulging disc vs herniated disc.💥 . The discs act as a cushion in between each one of our vertebrae or bones in our spine. You can think of them as mini jelly doughnuts 🍩 that act as the "shock absorbers" of the spine. As you sit, run, jump, etc. the discs are the ones that absorb that pressure. Sometimes through activity, trauma, or other factors, these discs can become irritated and can cause either local or radiating pain depending on if it's pressing against a nerve. Also, as we age the discs slowly become dehydrated making them more susceptible to injury. . 1️⃣Bulging discs. 📍When the nucleus pulposus, the jelly inside the donut, pushes against the tougher outer cartilage (annulus fibrosis), but does not break through. . 2️⃣Herniated discs. 📍When the nucleus pulposus breaks through the outer cartilage. 📍Herniated discs are more likely to cause pain as they protrude further out because its more likely to place pressure on the nerve roots leading to potential numbness and tingling. . There are multiple treatment options to address these dysfunctions and it is a case by case basis. Not everyone will be treated the same as signs and symptoms can vary. . Today I wanted to share a post by my man @wesleywang.dpt aka the ACL whisperer. I've had some ACL related questions lately, and I figured this would help answer those questions. - ACL Rehab ——- Almost every time I do a post on ACL rehab, I’ll have at least one person ask “how far along are they?” or “what month can I do this exercise?” The answer is ALWAYS it depends. No two people ever recover the same and these posts are all meant for educational purposes. ——- In the mid to late stages of rehab, the goals are simple but challenging to achieve. The goals are continued strengthening, proprioception/balance, gradual reintroduction of cutting/plyometric/sport specific tasks. While there is a list of other details involved, those are my priority. ——- Here are four exercises I like to use for continued strengthening and proprioception. These are moderate level exercises and can be progressed to be higher level. 1️⃣ Banded hip abduction on wall - one of my favorite closed chain glute med exercises. We are working on the stance leg, not the moving leg. 2️⃣ Split squat stance med ball throws - we’re working on being stable in a split stance to work on proprioception. This may seem like a simple exercise but the med ball makes it a lot harder to be stable. 3️⃣ Banded forward heel touch - it’s common to see a contralateral hip drop during heel touches which is why we added a band. Additionally, the dowel takes some pressure off to work on form. 4️⃣ Single leg reactive four way reach - I’m a fan of incorporating reactive exercises into every session regardless of what stage they’re in. My client tore 3 ligaments in her ankle which has caused quite the imbalance between the two legs. When the hip, knee, or ankle is injured it can throw all 3 out of balance. If untreated this could end up causes major discomfort performing even the simplest daily tasks. Working unilaterally forces the ankle, knee, and hip to stabilize a lot more than working bilaterally, you can also prevent the unaffected limb from taking over most the load by over compensating. The balance board is also great for stabilization. We did the box squats to make sure we could keep the hip abduction focused on with out over stimulated the body and losing focus. The second half of the session was focusing on opening up her posture, strengthening around the t spine and t spine mobility.

Building off my foot post from toe days ago. This is called toe sitting. It’s great for everyone to stretch out the bottoms of your feet after being in shoes all day. Be prepared it’s not the most comfortable pose so ease into it and use your breath. Hold 20 seconds, release and repeat up to 10 times building your way up to being able to toe sit 5-10 minutes at a time.
