Attention all men! You contribute half of the DNA when making a baby. Therefore preconception care and fertility treatment should involve both partners. In clinic, I see far too often that so much pressure is put on women when it comes to fertility and preconception care. Women slave endlessly trying to alter their diets, changing their lifestyle habits, supplementing with this and that, tracking their cycles and temperatures and testing for everything under the sun in order to get pregnant. Quite often men don’t get involved until there is a problem or a couple have had no success after 6-12 months of trying. Our gut health plays a large role in hormonal regulation and unfortunately when there is gut dysbiosis (imbalance of microorganisms in GIT). Certain microorganisms produce an enzyme called ‘beta-glucuronisade’. This enzyme works to deconjugate already metabolised oestrogens allowing them to re-enter circulation. 🦟Zika virus🦟 . Zika virus is a viral infection that is spread to humans from infected mosquitos, between humans via sexual contact, and spread from infected mother to fetus during pregnancy. . Symptoms of Zika virus include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (irritated eyes). . “Possible Zika virus exposure” is defined as travel or residence in an area of active Zika virus transmission OR unprotected intercourse with a partner who has. . Maternal-fetal Zika transmission can cuse miscarriage, stillbirth, and congential Zika syndrome with primarily neurological deficits including microcephaly (small head with collapsed skull), eye and retinal abnormalities, contracture of limbs, and movement disorders. Transmission of affected pregnant women to fetuses is about 5-10% . How to prevent Zika: ✴️Stay up to date with the CDC travel website list of locations with active transmission ✴️Pregnant women should avoid travel to these locations ✴️If travel is necessary, they should take precautions against mosquito bites ✴️Pregnant women should abstain from intercourse with or use a condom if their male partner has a possible Zika exposure (for the rest of pregnancy) ✴️Avoid exposure around the time of fertilization so that viremia does not affect a first trimester pregnancy. Women should wait 8 weeks after possible exposure, men should wait 3 months. Tips for preconception care: • Avoid endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs): In pesticides, plastics, additives and personal products. EDCs are linked with cancers and reproductive issues. Avoid BPA, UV filters, phthalates, parabens, triclosan, plastic water bottles and storing or reheating foods in plastic (use glass or stainless steel containers) and eat organic. • Personal hygiene products: Only use organic cotton tampons or pads. Cotton is one of the most heavily sprayed crops on the planet. Mucus membranes within the vagina/vulva rapidly absorb chemicals sprayed on menstrual products. Consider reusable menstrual cups made from BPA-free plastic; ensure adequate sterilization between uses. • Increase fatty acid intake: Wild caught deep sea fish including salmon and cod are rich in omega 3’s and contain DHA, essential for the development of the foetal brain, eyes and nervous system. Aim for 3 intakes per week. Vegan sources of fatty acids include hemp and flax seeds/oil. • Increase intake of leafy green vegetables: These are rich in folate, which is essential for healthy foetal development and to prevent neural tube defects. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower aid the liver in detoxifying hormones, particularly oestrogen to ensure balanced hormones. • Reduce stress: Fertility issues can cause considerable stress, which is counterproductive when trying to conceive. Incorporate gentle exercise such as walking, yoga or meditation and practice mindfulness to reduce stress. Hot baths with essential oils and epsom salts can also promote relaxation. • Pelvic floor exercises: Strong pelvic floor muscles prior to pregnancy and birth aid in a quicker recovery post birth by strengthening the muscles supporting the bladder, bowel and uterus to prevent pelvic organ prolapse. Aim to do Kegel exercises a few times a day. • Stretch marks: Daily use of vitamin E based skin cream on the abdomen and hips and zinc supplementation to reduce stretch marks. Chickpea and coconut korma curry with pumpkin - dinner inspiration courtesy of @cookrepublic An quick, easy, healthy and nourishing meal the whole fam will enjoy - and as a bonus freezes really well 😊 INGREDIENTS 2 cups (300g) pumpkin pieces 1 tablespoon olive oil salt and black pepper, to taste 1 tablespoon ghee or coconut oil 1 red onion, thinly sliced 3 garlic cloves, minced 2 tablespoons grated ginger 2 tablespoons chopped coriander root 1 teaspoon fennel seeds 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon garam masala 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 1/2 teaspoon sea salt flakes 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 tablespoon raw sugar 400ml coconut milk 250ml veg stock handful of Tuscan kale leaves, chopped 2 X 400g can chickpeas lime wedges, to serve slivered almonds, to serve fresh coriander leaves, to serve steamed rice, to serve INSTRUCTIONS Pre-heat oven to 180C. Line a baking sheet with baking paper. Place pumpkin pieces, olive oil, salt and pepper in a bowl. Toss to combine. Place pumpkin on prepared sheet and bake in pre-heated oven for approximately 15 minutes until pumpkin is just done. Remove from oven and set aside. Heat ghee/coconut oil in a large cast-iron pan on high. Add the onion, garlic, ginger, coriander root and fennel seeds. Sauté for a couple of minutes until onion becomes soft. Reduce heat to low. Add spices, salt and sugar. Cook for a few minutes, stirring constantly till the spices are cooked through. Add the coconut milk, veggie stock and chickpeas. Increase heat to medium and simmer for 20 minutes until curry turns a shade darker and becomes really fragrant. Remove from heat. Stir through the kale leaves and roast pumpkin pieces. Top with slivered almonds, coriander leaves and serve with lime wedges over rice.
