I made some ceramic beads and fired them in a fire last weekend. 🔥 Making beads is relaxing, as is staring into the dancing flames and listening to the crackling wood. Why is it so hypnotizing? I'm gonna put some of them in my hair and use most of them for future projects. You can read and see more in my latest Patreon post (link in bio). 🌿 #primitivepottery #ceramics #beads #handmade #crafts

#PrimitivePottery Definitely taking more my time on this one, being my second attempt ever. I love learning new skills and I get extremely excited when I first start doing them. However, being so determined and wanting to see progress; I tend to rush things. Which leads to mistakes, but hey, that's learning and this is surely teaching me patience lol Still have a little more cleaning up to do, then fire it when the weather finally stays clear. #Pottery #Survival

Wild clay samples after test firing at c/06. I fully expected these to melt all over the kiln shelf and was pleasantly surprised by the results! The first two on the left were extracted from my backyard when I was digging the hole for my pit firing, the third is a sample from a mountain near my home in CA and wasn’t processed at all, fourth is the green bentonite clay from San Diego which I processed heavily and have the most of. The last and smallest test tile is an Ilite clay face mask that I simply hydrated, shaped, and fired!

Here are some of my recent pots and the method I use to process the clay. I have two different style Native American style sifters made from yucca and one made from a gourd. I grind the large chunks of dry clay on a flat rock using a river rock. I then dump the clay into a sifter and sift it out onto another rock. I’ll continue doing this until I have a decent amount of fine, processed clay. From there I slowly add in water until I get the clay a consistency that I’m happy with and I’ll work the clay until it form a good clay body. You can then use the method of your choice (pinch pot, coil pot, paddle and anvil or any combination thereof) to form a pot. Let it dry anywhere from 3 days to a week and then build a large fire around it (after preheating it) to form a beautiful work of art that you can use to cook and boil water. I’m pretty happy with the nice reddish orange color of my newest pots. #primitiveskills #primitivesurvival #survival #primitivetechnology #primitivepottery #pottery #ancestors #ancestralskills #ancientskills

Levigation: Using gravity and clay’s ability for suspension in water to separate and remove heavier particles like sand, silt, and gravel. . The process of purifying native clays involves lots of mixing, pouring, sieving, and waiting... . 1- Dump your clay into a bucket of water and let it sit until it’s broken down (about a couple hours) . 2- Stir it up and let it settle for a few minutes so the heavier, non-clay particles fall to the bottom while the clay stays suspended in the water. 3- Pour the water through a sieve into a new bucket, but not too deeply, so the heavier particles are left behind. Discard what’s leftover (or save to add as grog later) . 4- Let the new bucket of clay-water sit for a couple days until all the clay settles at the bottom and into a slip like mixture, then carefully bail the water off the top of the clay. Repeat everything several times . 5- After bailing off the water for the last time, pour the clay into a 100% cotton pillowcase and let dry until desired plasticity is reached
