#neverending #runstreak Day 296: As per usual, on Tuesdays, I ran with the group at Fleet Feet Tacoma. I had already been there testing out the store's demo model of the HYPERVOLT Massager, for a while before tonight's run. I'm happy to say that after using it on my calf and hamstrung for about an hour, my plantar fasciitis is almost gone. At any rate, I ran with the 3-milers and got in 5k. Both the sun and the moon were in sight at the Finish tonight! Another Run of AWESOMENESS is in the books! On the Garmin Connect, they have these cute little, stupid badges. Much like Fitbit does. Idea is to let you find motivation to push yourself to do more. This one is just annoying. Can you get your steps in, 30 straight days. No breaks. For some bizarre reason I keep breaking the streak about 14 days. This Saturday, day 14, will again be the sticking point. Driving to Chicago. Over 11 hours in the car. How to get in 10,000 steps in a day like that??? Day98. Old running ground revisited. The last run here was three years ago. I'm always wary when I run here, in Feb 2009 my car was broke-in while I went for a dusk jog. This week for BRAIN INJURY AWARENESS MONTH I wanted to talk about RUNNING, specifically long distance MARATHON running! 🏃🏼‍♀️ • In October 2013, I ran my first marathon - 4:16:55! 🙌🏻 I was so excited and after finishing the race, I couldn't wait to see how I could improve before the next marathon. My training had been fun, I loved going for my long runs and I felt strong. Then, I sustained my brain injury in November 2013. It took me 19 months before I ran my second marathon...✌🏻 Training for my second marathon was extremely hard. I was very fatigued, my long runs took every ounce of my energy and I battled through some horrific headaches. Regardless, I ran my second marathon in May 2015 - 4:50:59! 👏🏻 I was a battle and despite feeling so slow and exhausted, I felt so accomplished! 💛 • Since May 2015, I've run 6 more marathons and I now have 8 full marathons under my belt! 😌 Though I’m proud of that, marathon training is immensely different post-brain injury and I've yet to beat my PR of 4:16:55 The closest I've come is my most recent marathon in October 2018 - 4:23:25! 🤩 I was ECSTATIC about that finish! • Here are some examples of how training looks different: 🥤 I will rarely leave the house for a long run without water/snacks because if I'm not constantly (i.e. every 3-5km) hydrating and eating, I get sick 😴 I have to nap after my long runs because they drain my energy; if I don't nap, I will most likely get a headache 🙆🏼‍♀️ My body can't handle tempo runs, speed work, and long runs all in one week - it's too much. I stick to easy runs on the weekdays and a long run on the weekend. • It can be VERY hard to watch other people train for marathons and not get down on myself because of how different my training looks. BUT, I'm training in a way that allows me to run long distances, allows me to not overexert myself and cause myself undo harm, and I'm still recovering from a brain injury! 🧠 • Being a long distance runner with a brain injury is different but it's not impossible! 👊🏻 It has a lot of challenges but like I've said, it doesn't mean I'm going to give up or give in! 💪🏻 •••
