Astronomers have found a star with origins close to the Big Bang! 🔭✨ Yes, using the geminiobs Observatory, we just found what could be one of the universe's oldest stars, a body almost entirely made of materials spewed from the Big Bang. The discovery of this approximately 13.5 billion-year-old tiny star means more stars with very low mass are likely out there—perhaps even some of the universe's very first stars. The star is unusual because unlike other stars with very low metal content, it is part of the Milky Way's "thin disk"—the part of the galaxy in which our own sun resides. And because this star is so old, researchers say it's possible that our galactic neighborhood is at least 3 billion years older than previously thought. “This star is maybe one in 10 million," said lead author Kevin Schlaufman The universe's first stars after the Big Bang would have consisted entirely of elements like hydrogen, helium, and small amounts of lithium. Those stars then produced elements heavier than helium in their cores and seeded the universe with them when they exploded as supernovae. The next generation of stars formed from clouds of material laced with those metals, incorporating them into their makeup. The metal content, or metallicity, of stars in the universe increased as the cycle of star birth and death continued. The newly discovered star's extremely low metallicity indicates that, in a cosmic family tree, it could be as little as one generation removed from the Big Bang. Indeed, it is the new record holder for the star with the smallest complement of heavy elements—it has about the same heavy element content as the planet Mercury. #space #astronomy #astrophysics #astronomyfacts #astro_photography_ #astrophotography #astronaut #scientist #science #sciencenerd #nerd #nasa #spacephoto #spacephotography #galaxy #nerd #solarsystem #star #galaxies #milkyway #astronomer #bigbang

Do you know we are constantly involved in a Space Race through the Universe? . . . At its fastest point - the equator - Earth is spinning on its axis at speeds of about 1,675 kilometres per hour (1,040 mph). What if you measured your speed on Earth relative to the rest of the Universe? To calculate that, we first have to figure out how fast the planet we're living on is moving around. While it's spinning at 1,675 km/h, it's also orbiting the Sun, and we can measure how fast by looking at how long one of those rotations takes - 365.24 days. As the video explains, that whole journey is about 940 million km (584 million miles), which means Earth is travelling around the Sun at speeds of around 107,290 km/h (66,667 mph). But the Solar System isn't a stationary object in the Milky Way galaxy, and the Milky Way galaxy isn't a stationary object in the Universe. So what if you added those speeds into the equation too? The Sun and all the planets in the Solar System are spinning around the centre of the Milky Way, while at the same time moving upwards relative to the Milky Way plane, and when you take all of that into consideration, we're moving around the galaxy at about 871,781 km/h, or 541,700 mph. And that's not even counting the fact that our Milky Way is also zooming through the Universe. . . #Earth #orbit #space #astronomy #astronomylover #astro_photography #astronomical #astrophotography #scienceteacher #scientist #science #nerd #planets #nasa #spacephotography #universe #galaxy #solarsystem #star #exploration #milkyway

I give a lot of tips for #TherapyThursday, but the truth is that none of these would work for me if it wasn’t for my antidepressant. I’ve been on one since my early 20s and I’ve tried to go off now 3 times. Every time it’s been a disaster. It’s amazing the difference an antidepressant can make. Without it, I don’t want to get out of bed and facing the day seems like an insurmountable challenge. I was sad for no reason. My husband would ask me “What’s wrong?” and I would say nothing because it was true - nothing was wrong, but it all felt wrong. One year, I tried to go off fit because I thought I could get better through exercise and food only, but it didn’t work. On my birthday, my husband and I went for a bike ride and I just started crying. It’s #MentalHealthAwareness Month and because I know depression and anxiety are rampant throughout academia, I share my story to let you know there’s nothing wrong with needing a little help. I’ll probably need it the rest of my life. . . . . . . . . . . #depression #mentalhealth #academia #phdlife #scientist #antidepressants #selfcare #selflove

“Water does not resist. Water flows. When you plunge your hand into it, all you feel is a caress. Water is not a solid wall, it will not stop you. But water always goes where it wants to go, and nothing in the end can stand against it. Water is patient. Dripping water wears away a stone...Remember you are half water.” —Margaret Atwood— May is #mentalhealthawarenessmonth 💝 Patience has never been a virtue of mine, and when I’m on the receiving end of it, I’m acutely aware that there’s still a curve for me to climb, both for being patient with others and being patient with myself. Patience is a valuable skill to have as a #scientist and #educator but also, as a #human which is just as important. I continue to observe and learn from those around me just how valuable, and how “seen” being generous with one’s patience can make someone feel. #goals #thebluebirdgirl #patience #mindful #patienceisavirtue #patienceiskind #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmonth #depression #manicdepression #mentalillness #patienceiskey🔑

#repost @fastcompany ・・・ Roberto Orosei knew as early as 2008 that he’d found something exciting bouncing off the surface of Mars: bright radar “reflections,” spanning about 12 miles across, roughly a mile below the planet’s southern polar cap.⠀ 📡⠀ The most plausible explanation was an underground lake of some sort, a potential harbor for extraterrestrial life. But Orosei wanted to make sure, which took almost a decade.⠀ 💧⠀ For discovering water on Mars, this Italian radar scientist is No. 6 on our #FCMostCreative list. Cotinine is an alkaloid that occurs naturally in tobacco, though at a lower concentration than nicotine. It is also the primary active metabolite of nicotine in humans, and has similar pharmacological effects. In fact, some of the effects of nicotine in the body are likely caused by circulating cotinine as well. When nicotine is administered, it is widely distributed to tissues, where it acts as agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAchR) and exerts its effects on the body (see last week’s #pharmacologyfriday and Tuesday’s #toxicologytuesday posts). Its metabolism occurs almost exclusively in the liver, where it is converted to several compounds including cotinine. The CYP2A6 and CYP2B6 enzymes of the cytochrome P450 family are responsible for the conversion of nicotine to cotinine. Once converted, cotinine has a half-life of 20 hours, and it is then metabolised by the same enzyme system to norcotinine, trans-3‘-hydroxycotinine and 5‘-hydroxycotinine. The metabolism of both nicotine and cotinine can be blocked by menthol, which utilises the same enzymes. For this reason, smoking menthol cigarettes can cause both nicotine and cotinine to circulate for longer, heightening their effects. Genetic differences in CYP enzyme activity also influence the rate of cotinine metabolism in the body. Cotinine can be detected in plasma, urine and saliva for several days after nicotine use, making it a useful biomarker for nicotine or tobacco exposure (including second-hand smoke), with urine allowing the most accurate level of detection. Like nicotine, cotinine activates nAch receptors, though with less efficacy, and has similar effects on the body. These include effects on memory and alertness (positive at low doses, though deleterious with high doses or chronic use), insomnia and digestive issues. There is some evidence of cotinine therapy decreasing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety and depression (in animal models), and research into its therapeutic potential is ongoing, though human studies have yet to show any compelling data.
