KNEE CARs — I don’t know about you, but after years of running and playing soccer my knees snap, crackle, and pop every time I move! I often get asked how to “fix” or get rid of these sound effects and my answer is always the same: if there is not an intense, sharp pain associated with your cracking joints, then there is absolutely nothing to worry about! Our bodies make sounds, and that is completely normal. . If you are experiencing some joint discomfort, or just want to maintain joint health, knee CARs are one of my favorite movements! CARs (Controlled Articular Rotations) help the joint to receive nutrition through the synovial fluid to keep your cartilage and joint lubricated and healthy. Knee CARs also provide a gentle nerve glide to the nerves of the lower extremity. . I like to keep my finger on the tibial tuberosity (bony bump on the top of the shin bone) so that I can feel the tibia rotating in and out as I perform the movement. Try performing 3-5 in each direction first thing in the morning or right before a workout as part of your warm-up.

🥇Want to sprint faster AND minimize likelihood for injury? Study this picture! ⠀⠀ 🐛A big part of sprinting fast is being able to maximize the efficiency of the force you put into the ground. And simply put, if you want to do this well, you need good mechanics! ⠀⠀ 🦔Faulty mechanics can lead to your force getting “eaten up” by the ground - SO, shown above are some common mechanical errors that are seen in many athletes’ top speed sprinting mechanics. The green arrows are meant to portray a more ideal posture at top speed that you should aim for. ⠀⠀ 🦜In sprinting, posture matters. A significant forward lean (as seen in the athlete above) throws everything off course and can prevent proper knee drive as well as cause the foot to land too far out in front of the body. These are two great ways to produce LESS force and transmit said force LESS efficiently. ⠀⠀ 🦘This forward lean can also lead to what some call “running in the backyard” – where the back leg trails too far behind, placing lots of stress on your posterior chain, namely the hamstrings. This is a big reason why mechanics matter when avoiding the infamous hamstring strain. All in all, adjusting your posture alone can lead to a whole spectrum of improvements in speed/injury prevention! ⠀⠀ 🐇Finally, fast sprinters spend short amounts of time on the ground – their feet “pop” off the ground quickly. It is safe to guess that this guy’s ground contact time is longer than it should be with how far his foot is landing in front of his body. His upper body has a long way to travel to get back over his foot – meaning that his foot will stay on the ground for longer than it should, eating up momentum and speed. ⠀⠀ 🕺🏼Hope this has helped! ⚫The Sled Push ⚪ - - The sled push scares a lot of people. I don't know why it has such a bad reputation, maybe because people don't fully understand it? Here's why we use it in ACL rehab as well as strength training in general! - - The sled is so beneficial because it mimics the lower limb biomechanics of running but with less wear on the body, so for ACL rehab its a useful tool to integrate in before you start your running program but also as you continue to progress your running program towards RTS. To progress sled push you can add weight, increase speed, work for a longer period of time or add distance.

🔥PATELLOFEMORAL PAIN HIP EXERCISES🔥 - It’s common to treat patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) by using exercises which strengthens the musculature around both the hip and knee joint. This post focuses on exercises for the hip joint. You can check out my post from 2 days ago for exercises focusing on the knee joint - Strengthening the hip abductors and external rotators have been shown to be beneficial for PFPS which can be achieved by using the three exercises in this post - Hip Exercises for PFPS (SWIPE to see video): - 1️⃣Standing hip abduction: Stand on one leg. Lift your other leg straight out to the side, and then lower it back to the starting position in a controlled manner. You should feel this mainly in your gluteus medius (the side of your hip) - 2️⃣Standing hip abduction with resistance band: Same as the one above, but this one adds load by utilizing a resistance band around the ankle - 3️⃣Hip external rotation with resistance band: Sit one a high bench or table with your feet above the ground. Take a resistance band around your ankle, and then externally rotate your hip by pushing your foot medially while keeping your knee or thigh in the same place - 4️⃣Side Bridge to Neutral Spine Position: Lay on one side and lift your hips from the floor while supporting your body with your elbow. ACL Rehab - mid to late stages —— Strengthening is a must in every stage of ACL rehab. Recovering patients can always benefit from continued strengthening. Additionally, I strive to get my athletes moving like athletes as soon as I feel it’s safe. Athletes are explosive and need to move that way in the later stages of rehab. This is necessary to regain their full athletic ability but psychologically helps them to understand what they’re working towards. —— Here are three examples of exercises I like to use during this phase of rehab. 1️⃣ Box jumps - working on absorbing force and exploding into a jump. 2️⃣ Sled push runs - this requires more force demand on the quads due to the force of the sled. 3️⃣ Step ups - I posted step ups yesterday but you can see the contrast between the two styles. Most Physios pick a side of “Yes ultrasound aids in tissue healing” or “No ultrasound is a complete placebo”. From my experience, iv not seen any significant improvement using ultrasound... but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for everyone. Ultrasound MSK diagnostics definitely is worth using. A piece of research compared 35 studies between 1975-1999 into the efficacy of ultrasound for treatment, they found that of the 35, only 10 were deemed to have suitable research methods. Of the 10 remaining, 2 suggested it might help some conditions (tendinopathy) and the other 8 said it had no effect.
