BUILDING BASE TOLERANCE . How do I build up the strength in my feet? How do we address plantar fasciitis? I have foot pain when I walk or run. What do I do? 📲 . I get these questions quite a bit. And the approach isn't terribly different than how I address other areas of the body. Identify what you can do tolerably. Identify what you want to be able to do. And scale initial accordingly and build off of that. . But sometimes you may not be able to handle exercises that I show. Or you might not be able to use a load high enough to elicit a strength gain. . One of the best foot strengthening exercises there is is a progressive walking program. But what if you can't walk for more than 5 minutes? Or you can't do heavy loaded calf raises or hopping and jumping? . That's where building a base tolerance may need to come first. And that's where low load exercises like this (thanks @quaddoc for volunteering your feet 😁) can come in. They aren't going to be enough of a stimulus to actually physically strengthen anything in the majority of people, but they can help you work your way towards tolerating the loads needed to do that. Think of them like your base work capacity for rehab. . So when I assign these, I really don't focus too much on a set number of reps. I'd just have a client go until they feel a strong burn in the area or come close to failure. Then dial up the volume via number of sets as we see what's tolerated. 📈 . From there, we can begin building the tolerance up so that we can work into those harder exercises like heavy loaded calf raises, hopping, walking, running, and general lower body strength work. . Build the base if needed. If you have the base, skip past it and get to the harder stuff. It's all about dialing in the right amount of stress for the individual at the end of the day. . Getting sick is the last thing you want to happen when you enjoy training and are making good progress. But if you feel really bad, it's probably a good idea to lay off the intense training sessions for a while and take some rest to let yourself recover properly [1]. - Taking a bit of need rest won't result in immediate muscle loss [2]. Recent research indicates that when trained individuals take up to 2-3 weeks off from strength training, muscle size does not significantly decrease [3]. So skipping a few days of training to recover from your illness is totally fine. - With that said, if you only have a mild cold or a slightly sore throat, you can choose to train if it makes you feel better. Training with moderate- to low-intensity, in this case, may be beneficial since research suggests light activity can reduce inflammation and improve the immune response to viral infections [4]. - All in all, don't be afraid to give yourself some rest if you do not feel good. We know that elevated stress (of all sort) contributes to fatigue, but do we really know what occurs at the cellular level? My answer is probably not entirely, however here are 5 of the most probable mechanisms that are responsible for fatigue (above) . Fatigue is something that can be planned (i.e. training and adaptation) or unplanned (i.e. lack of sleep, lack of nutrition, academic commitment, social life, etc) by the coach. This is why it is important for coaches to constantly evaluate the current fatigue level of their athletes. When both planned and unplanned stressors are in play, it becomes a guessing game UNLESS you have a sound readiness protocol in place 🤨❓❓ . Readiness metrics are indirect measures of fatigue that test the ability of the neuromuscular system and its current ability to handle stress. For example, the countermovement jump is often prescribed as a measure of readiness. It involves high neural drive, rapid neuromechanical coupling, and immediate fuel availability (i.e. PCr). Barefoot training is something I first started implementing within netball 🦶 ⁣ Ankle injuries rates in netball are through the roof. ⁣ Female athletes (large Q-angles) + hard surfaces + unpredictable landings = high injury risk. ⁣ Understandably these athletes heavily strap the ankle to help reduce this risk. However, overtime this leads to weak and dysfunctional feet/shank. It’s not uncommon to find netballers who can’t perform 20 body weight calf raises and balance on one-leg; yet they are expected to receive a ball, twist in the air, land on one leg and hold their balance 🧐 ⁣ Athletes I work with still strap during games, but in the gym we train them barefoot. Building strength through tones of calf raises, balance and eccentric strength from jumps/landings in multiple directions and mobility work for the shank. It seems to be working, with low injury rates.⁣ ⁣ Although netball is the extreme example, the majority of sports are performed on your feet and these principles should still be applied.
