Cycling, bone health, and Vitamin D ‘There is growing evidence that for athletes, being replete in Vitamin D is important for many key areas of health and performance.’ This includes bone health, muscle strength, and immune function. Bone health in road cyclists can be compromised due to 2 factors. Firstly, cycling is non weight bearing and therefore lacks skeletal osteogenic (bone stimulating) loading. Secondly, a lighter body weight can be advantageous and therefore can lead to restrictive nutritional practices. 28% of cyclists in the study were identified as having low energy availability (food intake) and low bone mineral density for their age. Having adequate energy availability IS THE TOP PRIORITY for HEALTH AND PERFORMANCE. Another important observation is that if in a state of calorie restriction and low energy availability, taking supplements does not help with bone health as interactive hormone networks responsible for bone health become disrupted. What does this mean? Risk of fracture, particularly spinal fracture, is increased from a fall, and performance markers can be reduced with restricted nutritional practices. ‘To perform at your full athletic potential you need adequate energy availability and Vitamin D.’ ‘Surprisingly low levels of Vitamin D in cyclists’ Dr Nicky Keay, Sports Endocrinologist.
