Often it’s those added little gritty, lo-fi or down right weird sounds that help a song reach its full potential and feel complete! . Think outside the box, experiment with instruments and signal flow and embrace those happy accidents! . This Casiotone is a prime example, early 1980’s tech (not the best) but can produce all sorts of wonderfulness, especially when run through effects. #494 Oracular Spectacular by MGMT (2007) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ MGMT are of a generation that knows what makes albums tick. Through the innovative slog of the 20th century, pop music-making was distilled down to science. Thus, a debut album like Oracular Spectacular is supposed to open and close with a bang, leave listeners with a good impression of the artist, and have a hit or two to get the word out on the radio. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This album succeeds in those respects. “Electric Feel” and “Kids” are two of the biggest synth-pop hits of the 2000s, utilizing big choruses and layers of keyboards to appeal to a broad audience while maintaining some artistic integrity. Other songs on the record, like 4th Dimensional Handshake and The Youth, serve the psychedelic-synth aesthetic and aren’t poppy at all. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As with all semi-serious artistic acts of the last 20 years, MGMT carefully both follow and break the rules. The music is The Cars meets Kraftwerk, and Andrew VanWynGarden’s wailing vocals recall David Bowie. The guitar, bass, and drums, all played by VanWynGarden, are excellent, as are Ben Goldwasser’s synthesizers. Favorite tracks are Kids, Electric Feel, Weekend Wars, and Time to Pretend. I quickly figured out that they are quite clever with sampling sounds to sculpt interesting musical compositions. I enjoyed that album so much, I saw them live, and grew a new appreciation for them, because they are excellent showman and entertainers as well. They used a real washing machine on stage, and used various methods and processes to create their intricate, and interesting compositions, it was captivating to watch.” . . . We were curious what Dave Smith would have to say about our latest video since 3 of the synths we used in the video were designed by him about 40 years ago. On the picture here the Prophet 10 we used. We forwarded the video to his company Sequential during the past weekend. Today we received a response : . "Dave and the rest of the company saw the video and we all really enjoyed it. Great track and really nice work! I'll be adding the video to our social media posting list to share in the next few weeks." . Met Dave once at the Frankfurt Messe about 15 years ago. He is a great personality. The instruments he has designed had an immense impact on music throughout the 70's and 80's. Today he is still designing groundbreaking instruments that help shape direction of music.
