Lets talk sleep! What are the predictors of sleep problems in infants? 1) Firstborn: because parents tend to be less tolerant of their child's cries, and they have more time to devote to their first child, including getting up and rocking the baby back to sleep in the middle of the night. 2) ) Colic or ear infection: children are much more likely to have sleep problems because they get into the habit of waking during the night when they aren't feeling well. Even if they feel better, they may still wake during the night and have difficulties returning back to sleep without help from their parents. 3) Same bed or room: all children who sleep in the same bed or in the same room as their parents wake during the night. 4) Breast-feeding: babies are more likely to fall into habit of nursing to sleep (breastfed babies tend to feed more frequently than formula fed babies because breast milk and most formulas contain the proteins whey and casein. Breast milk contains more whey, which is easier to digest, formula contains more casein, which babies digest more slowly. However, each baby has his own unique caloric needs, personality, and sleep patterns.And some formula-fed babies feed – and wake – just as often as breastfed babies) 5) Foods: it is rare but foods might be related to sleep problems, like milk intolerance. Some infants with milk intolerance take longer to fall asleep, and sleep less, and wake up more often at night. !!!! many people believe that the eating of solid foods improves sleep, and this is not true! infants who eat solids do NOT sleep any better than those who do not started solids. Sleeping for longer periods is caused by MATURATION, not changes in diet !!!! 6) Major changes: such as travelling, or parent returning to work, or illness, can cause sleep issues even in those babies who previously slept well 7) Awake or asleep: Babies who are put to bed already asleep take longer to fall asleep, and more likely to wake during the night, and sleep an hour less per night (📸by amazing @burtsbrisplease )

Being a Mom, it is sometimes hard to say, “I am exhausted”. Recently, I reached that point. I was burning the Candle at both ends - I was trying to Care for Maya, my Patients, my paperwork, take the dogs for walks, cook only healthy meals/snacks, be 100% present with Maya, keep the house somewhat organized, not look disheveled in public, remember to floss, and wake up at 5am to run with my amazing tribe. Apparently, this was not sustainable, I couldn’t run on just 4-5 hours of sleep forever. Fast forward to just Two weeks of sleeping in. And, I am already feeling so much stronger, Physically and emotionally. It is such a reminder that, as Women, we fight fire upon fire, ignoring the impending burn, and we continue to prioritise our feelings and needs so low and don’t always speak up when we should. we are expected to wear all these different hats and neglect the one that matters most, which is, ourself. My goal for the rest of 2019, is to not be afraid to ask for help, run with joy, and most importantly, Model for Maya that strength can be shown through vulnerability. The look most people don't see. You walk out of the house and most of the time you're put together. People see what you want them to see. They don't see the tired eyes, the messy hair, the pjs you've been wearing up until the moment you leave, the pure and utter exhaustion. This is the look my kids know well. But.... I'm coming to love this look. To me it's the look of love, of late nights making sure everyone is ok, the look of caring for others before yourself. I like to think Jesus looked a little tired. For instance, we put on pjs, brush teeth, read in bed for 10 minutes before putting the lights down. Now i want you to think about your bedtime routine which you repeat on a daily basis before going to bed.. is it relatively the same every night? . . . As i ve mentioned before, we all wake up during the night (around 2-5 times per night). Whatever sleep associations are present for you at bedtime also beed to be there for you during the night. Babies, too, have sleep associations, which can be either positive or negative ones. . . . . What is it, you may ask yourself now? . . 1) Positive sleep association helps your little one to fall asleep on their own (at naptime, bedtime, or at night). It can be a certain sleeping position, sleeping with a teddy (in the uk not advisable to have any toys till your child is 1, due to sids), having lights off/on, or having a white noise playing all night. . . 2) negative sleep associations are those that babies CANNOT control on their own, so they need the presence of something or someone to help them to fall asleep. Things such as nursing or drinking to fall asleep is probably one of the most common. Do you need to feed your baby when she wakes in the night so she can return back to sleep? Dont worry! You are certainly not alone in that!! . . . But please bear in mind that it doesnt matter what you do or dont do in order to put your child to sleep, as long as you are all well rested and it works for your family, anything else just doesn’t matter!
