Non Counter Movement Jumps (NCMJ) . Vertical leap is a clear functional movement that translates to many sports, including basketball, volleyball, and football. . From the rehab perspective and getting an athlete back onto the field, clients must exhibits good strength, mobility, power, speed, and control in the training room first. . A counter movement (CMJ) is widely supported to improve power depending on the task and forces imposed on the athlete. It has also been shown to improve vertical leap greater than the Non Counter Movement Jump. . The difference between the CMJ and NCMJ is that CMJ has a rapid eccentric muscular load followed by a quick concentric movement. The NCMJ is quick eccentric load, immediately into an isometric triple flexion stance to focus MORE on landing mechanics and LESS on improving neuromuscular drive and stretch-reflex contribution. . This is perfect for those coming off of an ACL or any other lower body injury and have not gotten intro to plyo yet, because it yields less rapid stress on the joints. . Seen here is a couple different NCMJ options starting from a high center of gravity standpoint , followed by med ball slam NCM (Vid 1). No jump is needed if strictly wanting to work on landing mechanics and absorbing eccentric and isometric loads in the low position. . Progression to NCM lunges to bias one leg vs the other (Vid 2), and then adding in the actual CMJ after the med ball slam (Vid 3). I usually propose 2-3 sets of 5, with a 30-45" rest between sets. Longer rest period needed if using Vid 3, 1-2 minute rest period. . Regression would be to take the med ball out of the picture and not prop up onto the toes as displayed in the videos. .
