Thoracic rotation, rib humps and lack of ROM... . This is truly a fun one... . As human beings we are all asymmetrical. The liver is on the right side, the heart on the left and lungs have 3 lobes on the right and only 2 on the left. This leaves us in situation where the thoracic spine is often slightly rotated to one side more than the other... . When there is this kind of rotation, it causes a posterior rib hump in the back and anterior rib flare in the front. Since rib cage position rules what can happen in the neck and low back, this is an area we should pay extra attention to... . The following is a very basic, ver effective, standing rotation test. It’s followed by an epically awesome backbend where the blanket roll is just put on my right side (the side that has a little more difficulty going into extension)... . This... . A ✨ Feels Great and ... B ✨ Gets the rib cage to move in... . The effect? More range of motion, more freedom in the neck and upper back and an easier ability to take a deep breath... . Check it out for yourself. See which side of your rib cage has a little more posterior hump and if this backbend may help.

It’s about training in awareness and getting a healthy sense of perspective. You’re not trying to turn off your thoughts or feelings. You’re learning to observe them without judgment. And eventually, you may start to better understand them as well. Mindfulness is the ability to be present, to rest in the here and now, fully engaged with whatever we’re doing in the moment Meditation is a skill. Learning to meditate is like learning any other skill. Think of it like exercising a muscle that you’ve never really worked out before. It takes consistent practice to get comfortable. It's meditation practice, not meditation perfect. There’s no such thing as perfect meditation. Sometimes your focus will wander or you’ll forget to follow your breath. That’s OK. It’s part of the experience. What’s most important is to meditate consistently. It’s one of those things where the journey is more important than the destination. The mind can be a weird place. It takes time to get comfortable with your mind. There might be setbacks along the way but that’s part of meditating. Keep practicing. The more you bend from your upper back, i.e. the more you open your chest, the harder it is to keep your shoulder girdle muscles activated. The easier way to understand this is in downward facing dog. The more backward you push your shoulders, the higher the tendency of your armpits to open to the side. That's why bending from upper back requires a lot of strength.
