So the primary series....its not very good hey?⁣ ⁣ The bulk of us are spending too much time in spinal flexion. School and work time means desk time, and desk time usually results in spinal flexion.⁣ ⁣ Without detailed instruction and coaching, forward bends (especially seated forward bends) tend to cause even more spinal flexion. Hip flexion requires hamstring mobility and patience...two things in short supply among us moderns.⁣ ⁣ It's ironic that people call the primary series yoga chikitsa (yoga therapy) because it would be hard to imagine something less therapeutic (for somebody sitting in a desk all day) than 90 more minutes of spinal flexion. And that doesn't even take into account the "enhancements" and "assists" or well meaning but misguided yoga teachers pushing you even deeper in spinal flexion. ⁣ ⁣ Yes, people do downward dog and upward regularly throughout the practice...but more often that not it those postures are reduced to exhausting thrusting, hinging, and flinging rather than thought spinal extensions.⁣ ⁣ Of the 20 seated postures in the primary series, 17 of them are forward bends. Given that repetitive spinal flexion is a known factor in lumbar disc herniation (McGill & Callaghan, 2001), it might be wise for Ashtanga yoga teachers and studios to start rethinking the case for teaching this sequence.⁣ ⁣ I know there are already hundreds of modified primary series classes being taught in studios around the world, but in my experience the primary adaptation was to reduce the number of postures in order to deliver a more marketable 60 minute product. ⁣ ⁣ A more sustainable sequence might include more time for even, gentle spinal extensions, more emphasis on hip flexion, and ideally some built-in variability in the form of variations, props, and modifications that are taught at the same time as the sequence itself.⁣ ⁣ 🤔🧠🧘‍♀️⁣ ⁣ By the way, I understand if you happen to be thinking "Who does this guy think he is?" I wonder the same thing myself.

And by okay! it probably need to be better. But Hey! I ain’t perfect , am also learning 😂 - . 🕉For those of you who may say “what the heck is Sanskrit ‘“ . I got you ?!! - 🕉Sanskrit in simple terms is ‘the ancient language the first yogis spoke. ‘ So yah! It’s basically learning another language. As if English isn’t hard enough.😂 - . 🕉Anyways , if you been to a yoga class , pretty sure you heard one or two Sanskrit words. - . 🕉Here my thoughts - if it’s a public , community or even a beginner yoga class - it may be helpful to translate to English or not use it at all. But always translate. Make it easy on everybody. - . 🕉Now there exceptions , depending on the style of yoga you practice, but regular gentle/ vinyasa classes(translation helps - I think).
